Sure; if you think of a 20mm cannon as a carbine, 30mm as a battle rifle and 40+ as a marksman's rifle, which is what I've tended to do. And not all cannons are designed equally. 
Getting through real tough armor, like Abrams-equivalents, is best left to specialty AT missiles with top-down arcs - Javelins being a real world example.

Weapon lingo is easy enough to wiki, but I'll answer any Qs you may have. The good thing about playing mercs is nobody has to worry about being precise with military proccedures, terms, routines, etc.
