Oh, a little boy turned into this monstrosity because his power of "adaptive regeneration" is always-on and he pretty much abused it for several years by constantly damaging and mutilating himself in order to grow stronger - and because the adaptations get more and more extreme the more harm is inflicted.

As to where he fits in - well, I was thinking to explore the classic trashy transhumanism problems, powers separating Variants from normal people, changing them into something greater yet something less than human if they cannot control them, both mentally and in Uber's case physically.
