Sorry, I just wanted to clear/explain some things that maybe didn't make sense in my post.

A) there was no physical pull on the ear but more of a grabbing of the attention that couldn't be ignored. 

B) the boys approached from behind you. They are not in the doorway.
The door hasn't opened.

Sorry for any confusion, I just wanted to put us all on the same page.
