Welcome to the shadows, chummer! In the tabletop RPG Shadowrun, players take on the roles of Shadowrunners - agents for hire who take part in illegal or quasilegal "Runs", specialising in a variety of fields including assassination, sabotage, kidnapping... you get the idea. The same group of Runners will often work together during the majority of their runs - when your job can get you killed, working with people you know is usually the safest bet. The setting is 2060s Japan (renamed the Japanese Imperial State in 2006), specifically Tokyo. At this point, technology has advanced so that cybernetics are popular, particularly among the rich, but Earth is still the only colonised planet and there is definitely no FTL travel. There is one thing in particular which sets Shadowrun out from other cyberpunk RPGs, however - the rebirth of magic. In a global event known as "the Awakening", thousands of children worldwide were "deformed". They were named elves and dwarves (because that's what they resembled). Dragons came into existence thanks to magic's return to the world. About a decade later, orcs and trolls joined the party, and sorcerers and shamans wandered the streets.
