History: After managing to repel the Arabs(IOT the Arabs defeated the Byzantines while they were in the middle of a war with the Sassanids and also were embroiled in a plague) before defeating the Sassanids, the Byzantine empire was able to remain in its position of world power. Barely scraping past the plague wounding it, they initiated a series of reforms and expanded the military, while lowering personal freedoms. Instead of losing the wars against the Turks, they become stuck in a stalemate. Much of the empire collapses, however a large portion of the core territory stays. The Turks are finally defeated and, to remain solvent after the expensive wars, greatly increases taxes for a period. After a brief but bloody civil war, the 'filthy dissenters' were purged and what remained was a strongly central government ruling over the intensely loyal citizens. Focusing a large portion on innovation, the government spurned advances in military technology, engineering, and physics.
Culture: An extremely patriotic, hard-working, industrious people, the Byzantines are attached solely to their nation and nation alone. Hardline conservative, which leads to high birth rates and a fairly successful economy.
