[*]Gideon is someone who is not strictly a loner, but also is someone who does not see himself as needing or wanting too many close ties in The Zone. Jovial, gregarious and talkative to his friends (of which he keeps some, but not many) or those he's trying to strike a bargain with, and curt but polite to others who aren't strangers, he otherwise mostly keeps to himself and his business unless asked, and even then he can be evasive.

A studious and concentrated mind, he fully commits himself to a task to try and see it through to the best of his ability . . . so long as its not hare-brained stupid and the pay-off is compelling enough.

He's also quite protective of what he has and will go to pretty considerable precautions to protect his possessions, such as they are.

[*]Gideon grew up in Ontario, Canada, born to a middle-class family in a suburban city he had lived a fairly structured and stable life in his early years before getting his first taste of freedom in University. There he studied in the Humanities, with dreams of becoming a professor, but enormous tuition costs combined with even larger costs of living greatly depressed his prospects of living his dream comfortably. He believed that education should be free, but barring that he believed that if he were expected to have money then he wanted to find the best way to make money as quickly as possible. He had no desire to toil away in some boring desk job for decades earning a meagre pay-check when he could be out enjoying life and all the pleasures it could bring as well, or partaking in a career he actually enjoyed when he is in the prime years of his life. 

Fears of nuclear war and annihilation from said war had also plagued on his mind, though after the brief exchange of the Two-Day War and finding that they weren't all going to be vaporized or die of cancer immediately, he found out an excellent means of profiting off of the unique situation there. The raw materials and equipment that could be salvaged from within The Zones could yield tremendous profits on the world market just by weight alone, for those brave enough to risk radiation and potential death.

Thus, working through his academic channels, Gideon managed to procure himself into an exchange program in Germany, under the pretense of getting a Masters studying the human impacts of The Zones. Mostly to help with a convincing story if he got stopped by German Immigration or possibly the Military forces cordoning off whichever Zone he picked to try and enter, though he trusted his money to be more convincing than whatever bullshit story he came up with. He used what funds he had saved to buy some basic gear for travelling and protection within the Zone, and bribed his way through some of the Guards of The Circle with promises of more to come given access to the wealth that could be found within The Zone.

That was five years ago, since then, Gideon has worked to become self-sufficient within the Zone, become a aware to its numerous hazards and how to protect himself against them, and has worked to make a name for himself as a proficient scavenger and salvager. Working both on commission and out of his own volition, he picks at the bones of dead cities and human habitations for anything of value on the Black Market, trying to save up enough money to get rich quick and return home without being killed or arrested.
