It seems like you guys are kinda already a long way into this, but I'm willing to provide help if you still want it. As for plot, my best idea is:
-A dystopian fantasy world in which the haves and have-nots are determined by magical abilities. The sorcerers (or wizards, or warlocks or whatever) rule through might, while the non-magical eke out an existence performing the basic labour that a nation relies on. A guerrilla resistance force is built (including those without magic, as well as one or two sympathisers from the elite) in order to break the rule of the corrupt government.
