The demon realm is the gist of it really. The Nether is just the name he has for it since he doesn't fully grasp what he's interacting with, as I'd assume reading material on the realm of daemons would be rather difficult if not near impossible to find. I was also leaving it more open, since given historical events there may be remnants of those creatures that royally fucked up all of the realms nearly a milenia ago present and possibly communicating with him as well.
