So, none of the current characters "defected" from soul society. They were defeated and kicked out by other shinigami, calling themselves the Junsei. They did not explain their motive/as to why they were doing it and they were not of any known rebel or opposing faction. They [i]are[/i] shinigami, just to make sure that's clear.
