Since this is a fantasy (even though we lack magic and other races), can we still have fantasy-style monsters?

Like, say, a giant sea monster who roams a small part of my nation's coast and makes things difficult for everyone involved. Including my nation :lol

I'm not even sure I'll use that idea- hell, I probably won't- but I still wanna know :P
