Amber Pine

Outside Mesalon Pokecentre

@Noxx

As Nyxx's new Pokemon let out a cry, Amber jumped up. White light burst from the bag, prompting Nyxx to rummage through to check on Sloth - who had changed considerably. The fox's body had grown larger and sleeker, his fur standing up in yellow spikes. Kyra leapt out of her Pokeball to see what all the noise was about.

"Ah! Are you alright?" Amber asked Nyxx. Once it turned out she was, the researcher turned her attention to the Electric type. "A Jolteon? Already? That's the first time I've seen a Pokemon evolve by accident! Actually, it's the first time I've seen a Pokemon evolve at all!" She pointed her Pokedex at Sloth.

"Jolteon, the Lightning Pokemon," the device informed her. "They send out electrical charges of about 10,000 volts. Because they are high-strung, it can be difficult to grow close to them."

Whipping out her notebook, she scribbled down notes. "Huh... It seems this one's an exception," she commented, watching the Jolteon fall asleep.

Kyra bounded over, sniffing and yapping, wagging her fluffy tail as she followed Sloth, who had to be carried by Nyxx. Amber gave a slight smile at the contrast between the two Pokemon.

"Well," she said in response to Nyxx's question, "We could go find somewhere to train our new Pokemon, let them try out their moves, if that's what they want to do." She took a quick look in the direction of the nearby mart. "Once we've stocked up."

After sending his goodbyes to Amber and Nyxx, Oscar recalls Skoll and Nomia and heads to the outskirts of town. Oscar releases Skoll and Nomia. "Okay. We are going to train together. Although most gym battles might be one on one, I feel that we need to learn aid each other when the time arises. At the moment, I would like to do combining moves and tagging. I will explain more once we find a wild pokemon for you to fight. RR, I would like to sit this one out for now." Roadrunner looks saddened but Oscar whispers to him. "Do not worry, You will get your turn. I want to see if these two have a thing for each other.

@LuckyBlackCat

Nyxx looked down at the all new Sloth it seemed that the evolution to a normally hyperactive Pokemon did nothing to change its personality, honestly, she wasn’t even sure he realized he had a completely new trainer; not like her mother was actually going to train him. Looking down at the Rockruff that started following her due to its general interest in Jolteon and lifting a brow as it nipped at her ankles.

“I’d suggest we... get some potions and do some battles before the gym, this one especially needs to wake up,” she said, looking down at the yawning electric type prompting her Swablu to release itself from his Pokeball and proceed to peck at Sloth’s head. “Oh, I can tell this is going to be a delightful friendship,” she sighed, shaking her head returning them both to their separate balls.

“This place has a lot of trainers I’d assume trying to emulate the gym leader so finding a fight won’t be hard we just need to figure out when is a good time to do the gym challenge it, ” she explained walking in the direction of the mart with a new found burst of energy that more than likely won’t last too much longer

Figuring that it’d take some time before the gym battle actually started, Aedre sat down on the stands where a crowd of other people — some spectators from town and some who looked like they were from the monastery — had gathered. Pulling out her Pokeball, Aedre released her Fletchling and watched it flutter onto her shoulder, landing and preening itself there. “Hey Alitis,” she said, reaching up and scratching the bird Pokemon under its chin. The Fletchling fluffed up its feathers in delight before smoothing them down to look around at his surroundings. Aedre did the same, looking over the crowds again before turning to Alex and Rheese who were seated beside her in the stands.

“So it looks like set-up is going to take a while,” she started. “Wanna tell me what the debacle this morning was about and how you all met? It didn’t look like you two knew what was happening between Sophia and her friend earlier, so you’re probably not all childhood friends starting a journey together, right?”

"I'd say after we've battled a few trainers, it'd be a good time to try the gym," Amber replied, returning all her Pokemon before following Nyxx into the mart. After a quick look around at the available stock, she bought three potions.

"From what I've heard, Normal types are popular here," she continued, "but they're one of the more versatile types. They have all sorts of ways to compensate for weaknesses."

With two Rock types, she'd have to watch out for Fighting type moves, and hope none of the trainers she battled had a Deerling. It would probably be a good idea for her to hold off the gym battle until she had at least one other type.

When the boy expressed a desire to train for battles rather than contests, Solanna hesitated. She could see herself in him. Or rather, she could see the confident beginner trainer she'd once been. And that was the problem.

"Ok!" she said, putting on a bright smile as she walked with him to the outer edge of the town, Whimsicott in her arms. She wouldn't let her own issues stop her helping another trainer. She wouldn't...

"What moves do they have? There are many ways moves can be combined." After taking a look around for any wild Pokemon, she turned back to the boy. "Ah! Please excuse me. I didn't get your name," she said. "I'm Solanna."

Oscar leans close to Solanna and whispers, "I think there is a potential relationship between the two and I want to foster it." Oscar grins like cheshire cat. Solanna gave a friendly smile. "Well, there should be enough wild Pokemon around here for you to find out how those two can work together," she replied. "Maybe your Eevee could distract it with Baby Doll Eyes or Sand Attack, so Growlithe can move in with Ember."

Her smile grew at the mention of a possible relationship between the two Pokemon. "It looks like they're pretty close already," she whispered back, observing them.

Something else caught her attention. The bushes ahead rustled, and a small, green-capped Pokemon emerged. Turning its head in the direction of the Eevee and the Growlithe, it slowly approached.

"There's your answer," Solanna whispered to Oscar. "That's a Ralts. They're drawn to affectionate feelings."

Nyxx grumbled as she started shopping around for potions and pokeballs grabbing ten regular balls to get the free premier ball stuffing them in her bag was the real challenge as it was already stuffed with items and other miscellaneous items. Finally, after causing one of the pockets to rip wider she stuffed it all in sighing in the complete satisfaction of her victory. Placing her bag back on her back and follows Amber around the mart helping her look for whatever she needed.

“Pokemon tend to congregate around their likes and neutrals so this being a normal type centered town we should be able to find just about every type aside from dragons and rare things like that" Nyxx began to talk again as she walked around with Amber “We won’t find many wild fighting types but trainers looking to have an edge will have them so be careful about that” she continued while purchasing a revive in the process.

“Windshire?” Aedre echoed. “Another town, right? I just arrived in the region three days ago. Four, if you count today,” Aedre continued. “At first I came here to pick up a rare Pokemon to study from the Kraterdesh gym. A Honedge. After that I was supposed to head back to Hoenn, but the lab I’m working at wanted me to pick up a package somewhere in Mesalon. It’s supposed to be arriving tomorrow,” Aedre explained. “I’m free the rest of today as well, and probably tomorrow. I haven’t booked my flight back yet.”

Aedre shrugged, grinning. “Who knows? Maybe I’ll take an extended vacation here under the guise of field work to study the Honedge in its natural environment.”

Skoll notices Nomia and shows a glint of happiness. Oscar whispers to Roadrunner "Go and join the others. The little guy might be part of the team." Solanna couldn't help but grin. "It looks pretty young," she whispered. "At least it's getting along well with the others." Whimsicott hopped down and joined the little group.

Watching the group of Pokemon reminded Solanna of her early days as a trainer. She'd been so hopeful, so determined to rise higher and higher, get into that tournament and win... The memories brought a pang of bitterness.

The Ralts instantly backed away. "Hey! It's ok," Solanna reassured it, giving an awkward smile. She had to think of something more cheerful, quickly... The upcoming contest. Her plans for future shows. As she turned her mind to happier thoughts, the Ralts relaxed.

Amber continued to browse along with Nyxx, who had perked up considerably from the shopping. For a second, she wondered how the other trainer could afford all those items, but the answer came to her. Being a celebrity's daughter had its advantages.

She listened to Nyxx's comment on the area's type variety. "Well, from what I read, some Fighting types are drawn to the peace and quiet of Mesalon," she replied. "It lets them fully focus while training. Same with Psychic types. I'll be surprised if we don't see any Meditites around here."

Her attention settled on some unconventional Pokeballs, dark green with lighter spots, red bands around the middle. "Dusk Ball?" she said, reading the note by them. "Those should be useful in the caves, or to catch nocturnal Pokemon."

After purchasing two of them, she turned to Nyxx. "Ready to find somewhere to train?"

The Ralts reminds Oscar of a contest which had a Gardevoir and Gallade competing against each other. This brings a smile to Oscar's face. The Ralts senses Oscar's happy reminisce. The Ralts pardons itself from the group, goes to Oscar's leg and taps him on the leg. Oscar snaps out of his daze and looks at the Ralts by his leg. "uhm. Is something the matter?" Thoughts of setting out, catching new Pokemon, as a beginner trainer crept back into her mind. Solanna forced herself to think of contests. She didn't want to upset this Ralts again, or scare it away before Oscar had a chance to catch it.

Rheese Laudat

Mesalon Gym

"As for what happened yesterday...Well I'll just leave it at the fact that we were attacked by some weirdo that everyone and their mother claims was part of Team Noble." Rheese said rubbing under his shirt where his ribs were bandaged.

As Rheese watched Sophia and Lan take their places across from each other and he felt a strange bit of anxiety. Unlike most of their group that was present, Rheese was simply told that this Lan guy had single-handedly shut down the guy that had completely wrecked everyone else that had been present. This was the guy that saved their lives while he was unconscious. Obviously he wouldn't see the level of battling that Lan must have displayed given the fact that this battle was for Sophia's first badge. If Lan were to use his full power, he would be completely insurmountable to almost anyone that challenged the gym.

Lan vs Sophia

Sophia took her place, shoulders back, head high. She'd given Lan the wrong impression yesterday. Now she'd prove she wasn't the helpless victim she'd seemed to be.

After taking a deep breath, she faced him, her smirk hiding any trace of nervousness.

"Well," she announced, in what she hoped was a bright and clear tone, but her mouth had gone oddly dry. "It's about time I gave everyone here the show they're waiting for!" She gestured towards the group who watched from the stands.

It would be fine, it would be fine, it would be fine...

Lan stood, the action itself was serene but seemed to carry quite a bit of weight. He looked Sophia directly in the eye with a slight frown subtly communicating that he wasn't buying the act. She had clearly been at this charade for a while, most would certainly fall for the facade.

"Don't handicap yourself by hiding your nervousness, you can't grow as a trainer if you prematurely pretend to be a master." Lan said as though he was disciplining a student. This girl's fake confidence would only confuse her Pokemon, if she kept up her act the battle would be decided before either of them even sent out their first Pokemon.

The referee made her way to the sideline with a flag in each hand for the battlers. A large wood framed screen behind her lit up with the picture from Sophia's trainer card on top and Lan's portrait below it. Three Pokeballs appeared below them both and a "VS" symbol separated them.

"The battle between the gym leader Lan Sohai, and the challenger Sophia Danvers is about to begin! This will be a three versus three battle, only the challenger may switch Pokemon. Are you both ready?" She asked, recieving a nod from Lan.

Putting her hand on her hip, Sophia laughed. "Nervousness? Please," she replied. "I came here for a battle, not a lecture."

Although she made every attempt to mask it, she couldn't deny to herself that she was nervous. She'd imagined this moment many times, preparing herself, but now here it was, about to happen. Remembering her mother's words two days before - "Make us proud" - she kept her steely, determined gaze on her opponent.

With a nod at the referee's announcement, the young psychic made the three Pokeballs drift around her. Plucking one out of the air and returning the other two to her free hand, she sent out her first Pokemon. "I'll start out with you, Gothita!"

Gothita stared ahead, waiting for the opposing Pokemon to appear.

His unimpressed expression unchanging even as a few individuals in the stands either cheered Sophia or gasped at her psychic display. Lan slowly pulled out a Pokeball. "Furfrou." He said simply. The white Pokemon made a soft cry upon exiting the ball and looked back and nodded at his trainer. It was clearly younger than the one that had been used the day before, but it still appeared to have quite a bit of experience.

"You have the first move." Lan said politely bowing. It seemed the only way Sophia would learn would have to be through defeat. Clearly the young one had quite a bit to prove, but Lan seriously doubted that alone would be enough to power through his team.

The spectators' cheers gave Sophia a needed confidence boost. She could do this. She sneered as Lan sent out the scruffy dog, clearly younger and lower-level than the Furfrou she'd seen the day before.

"Gothita, hit with Confusion!" she commanded. Gothita stepped forward, hitting with a telekinetic force, sending the Furfrou flying back several paces. It righted itself, seemingly unfazed.

"Clearly you decided to approach this gym too early." Lan said. "You're not quite ready for this battle as you are." From most others this statement may have been seen as a taunt, but Lan's voice conveyed something closer to an old man teaching one of his grandchildren.

The first round had already essentially been decided once what Lan could only assume was Gothita's primary attack had hardly affected Furfrou. While it would be much simpler to go on the offensive at this point, Lan took the safe approach with a status move.

"Furfrou, use toxic." Lan said calmly. The white Pokemon spewed a jet of poison directly at Gothita.

The self-assured look on Sophia's face faltered for a moment. "Oh yeah?" she replied. "I'll just have to prove you wrong, won't I?" It was strange. There had been nothing rude about what Lan had said, but that made it harder to ignore.

"Keep at it, Gothita!" she called. "Use Confusion again!"

Gothita, shuddering slightly from the poison attack, nonetheless stood up straight and repeated the Psychic-type move.

"Prove me wrong if you can, child. I'll commend you if you manage to turn this around." Lan said with a sigh. The affect from the psychic type attack was slightly more apparent this time around as it was beginning to wear Furfrou down slightly. Lan's composure softened from a battling stance to something more akin to a teacher.

"Furfrou, cotton guard." Lan said. His Pokemon complied, slightly confused as to why it would need to buff its physical defense against an opponent that was clearly about special attacks. It seemed like he was either giving Sophia a chance or showing her how futile the battle was.

Sophia chuckled. "Cotton Guard? Like that'll work against a psychic attack." This gym leader was going easy on her! How insulting! She'd show him what a bad idea holding back was.

"Keep using Confusion!" she commanded to Gothita. This time, after being thrown back, Furfrou struggled to get back on his feet. "Looks like this is turning around already!" Sophia commented, a proud grin spreading over her face.

Lan smiled slightly. For just a moment, Sophia's confidence was well founded as she had managed to stay on the offensive the entire battle up to this point. Perhaps it was time to flip things.

"Secret power." Lan said, figuring he had given Sophia enough of a chance to do damage. Despite Furfrou's low level, the blast of energy crashing into Gothita was impressive as it cracked the ground beneath the two of them.

"Ah!" Sophia's eyes widened as she watched the energy attack slam into Gothita. The Psychic-type jumped back up, but wobbled as the poison took its toll on her.

"Another Confusion!" Sophia called. "That could be enough to take it out!" Gothita complied, flinging the Furfrou back. As it turned out, it wasn't enough. This Furfrou was tougher than the new trainer had thought.

"Telling your pokemon that it could be enough to take something out creates uncertainty. If they don't think you believe they can pull it off, they won't be able to put everything they have into it." Lan said. Perhaps Sophia wouldn't listen to his words, but she wasn't the only one that could hear them.

"Close the distance and hit it with another secret power." Lan said calmly as though he were simply conversing with his Pokemon. Furfrou dashed forward immediately and fired another secret power, this time at point blank range. Dust exploded in every direction from the impact.

Sophia gasped as Gothita tried to stand up, only to collapse. "Gothita, come back!" she said, recalling the fainted Pokemon to her Pokeball.

"Your turn, Staryu!" The star-shaped Pokemon appeared in front of the weakened Furfrou. "That Furfrou's almost down! Hit it with a Water Gun!" Despite the growing worry, Sophia put all the effort she could into keeping her facade in place. If it slipped again, that wouldn't do her Pokemon's morale any good.

With a "Hyah!", Staryu shot a blast of water at the Furfrou, sending it flying. Sophia resisted the urge to bite her lip in anxiety. It had to work, it had to work...

This time, Furfrou seemed be down for the count. Though it didn't last long as it quickly got up and regained its fighting stance once more.

"Going into this battle using only brute force was your first mistake. You clearly haven't developed any strategy with your Pokemon and seem to prefer trying to just blast through any obstacle in front of you. Now, Furfrou fire back with Secret power." Lan said. It may not have been fair of Lan to say such things as at the current level they were battling, there weren't many other strategies available. Even so, a trainer worth their salt would at least attempt something once their current approach didn't bear fruit.

With a battle cry, Furfrou fired another powerful blast directly at Staryu. Enduring hits was certainly something Furfrou could do, but a pokemon like Staryu would certainly feel the impact.

After flying back from the blast, Staryu leapt up and spun in a blur to face its opponent again. Its limbs drooped slightly, but it remained standing.

"As if that Furfrou can take much more!" Sophia shouted. Surely, in this case, brute force would be enough. It had to be. What other options did she have, anyway?

"Use another Water Gun!" Another jet of water slammed into the Furfrou, who seemed ready to topple.

"Furfrou is much more resilient than you seem to believe. Perhaps once you gain some more experience as a trainer, you will be able to pick up on such things." Lan said as Furfrou righted itself again. He couldn't take a whole lot more, but there was almost no doubt that he could finish this battle. "Furfrou can still take plenty of punishment, your Staryu, on the other hand...secret power." He commanded once more.

Firing again, the bright flash of Furfrou's secret power collided with Staryu once more. Furfrou seemed to be nearing its limit, but Lan would still have two other Pokemon that were just as powerful.

"Let's see about that!" Sophia said. "Staryu, Water Gun again! ...Ah!" She looked on in shock as, instead of attacking, Staryu flopped to the ground, its core blinking.

Clenching her jaw, she returned Staryu. "You can do this, Purrloin!" she shouted, sending out the last member of her team who could still fight. "Scratch!" One more hit would probably take out the Furfrou, and if that was Lan's strongest Pokemon, maybe Purrloin would be able to beat the others on her own...

Pouncing forward, Purrloin lashed with sharp claws at the Furfrou.

Suddenly Lan's earlier 'mercy' resurfaced as Purrloin's scratch did next to nothing. The buffed defense from when Furfrou used Cotton Guard before allowed Furfrou to effortlessly take the attack. Instead, the cat Pokemon's claw seemed to get hung in the dense layer of fluff that was Furfrou's fur.

"Perhaps if you had prepared before attempting this battle it would have gone differently. Secret Power." He said with a sigh. While a single shot wouldn't be enough to take Purrloin out, at this point even someone like Sophia would likely see what was coming.

With Purrloin still in contact with Furfrou from the previous attack, it was impossible to miss. The explosion striking Purrloin even singed Furfrou's fur slightly.

Purrloin flipped through the air, landing with a thud that made Sophia wince. Staggering back up, the cat hissed at Furfrou, even though there was nothing she could do to truly seem like a threat. Her fur smouldered, and she swayed in place, about to fall at any moment.

Sophia stared at the one-sided battle, struggling to think what to do. Was there any way she could turn the tables? Any way not to get Purrloin pointlessly hurt, and lose anyway?

The old man was right, she realised, a wave of shame washing over her. She could almost feel the spectators' gazes burning into her, judging her for her weakness. So much for setting an example.

"Purrloin..." Sophia said, her voice wavering, her self-assured mask cracking. The cat Pokemon weakly turned her head, awaiting the command to attack.

Taking a deep breath, Sophia made her decision. It was through gritted teeth that she gave the order to her Pokemon.

"Purrloin, come on back." Once Purrloin had vanished into the Pokeball, Sophia's grip tightened around the capsule. Her hand shook. After what she'd let happen with Alexis the previous day, she refused to have her Pokemon get further, needlessly injured.

As the referee announced Lan Sohai as the winner of the battle, a cheer rose up from the crowd. Sophia couldn't look at Lan, at the spectators, at anyone. How would she be able to face them again, after this?

She took a step back. Then another. Then, without a word, turned and ran from the gym.

Though to many Sophia's running away may have seemed cowardly to Lan it was a step in the right direction. Swallowing her pride and returning her Pokemon instead of allowing it to be hurt was admirable, even if Sophia seemed emotionally damaged in doing so. She would certainly return at some point, those like her almost always did. Not only to reclaim their pride, but to discover what they needed to progress.

After returning Furfrou to his Pokeball, he handed it to one of his students to get the Pokemon healed. Lan looked up to the stands, if any of the other trainers wanted to challenge him this would be a good opportunity.

Solanna smiled at the little group before turning back to Oscar. "Well, I don't have any Psychic types, but I've met quite a few people who do," she replied. "What I can tell you is most Pokemon of this type are highly intelligent. They're good at helping their trainers with difficult challenges. And in a lot of cases, their telepathic abilities mean they work well as part of a team. I've seen some pretty impressive contests involving Psychic-type combos."

She thought back to one of the most memorable shows she'd seen. Two Meowstics, a male and a female, helping each other perform a vast and varied array of moves.

While talking and reminiscing, she didn't notice Whimsicott sneak up until cotton puffs blew all over her. The fluffy little Pokemon giggled.

"Just going to warn you," Solanna said to Oscar with a chuckle, brushing away the cotton, "Ralts is part Fairy type. And, as you can see, fairies can be a little on the mischievous side."

Oscar snickers "I am sure that I can cope. At least it is not a ghost type." Oscar looks at his small but growing team. If Oscar needs any edge against Team Noble and gym leaders in order to win. Oscar knows what to expect when Roadrunner evolves. Skoll and Nomia and their evolutions are relativelly easy to train if one gets them at a young enough or so Oscar has heard. Psychic types are among one of the few that are hard to train and satisfy. The bittersweet of Sophia comes to mind. Oscar thinks that it might be a good idea to track Sophia down to see if she could point him in the right direction since Sophia would known the most about psychics. Daisho senses Oscar's feeling and asks the others about it. They explain the events over the last few days. They all agree to go and cheer him up. First, Roadrunner goes up to Oscar and gets his attention. Oscar snaps out of his daze and crouches to talk to Roadrunner. Before Oscar could mutter a single word, Roadrunner steps to the side and Skoll and Nomia tackle Oscar to the ground and start to assault his face with their tongues."Okay, you two. That was a good one. Can you stop please?" After that, Skoll and Nomia stop and get off. As Oscar gets up, He sees that his pokemon form a line in front of him. He gets a feeling of fellowship. Oscar smiles. "Thanks you, Guys. I will do my best to live up to your expectations of me."

Aedre Charbonnet

— Mesalon Gym —

At first Aedre had been confused at the way the battle was going. Sure gym leaders were strong, but they held back their power, letting it loose in measured amounts when trainers challenged them. When Sophia’s first, then second and then third Pokemon were knocked out by the same Furfrou, Aedre was stunned. Was the gym leader really that strong? This seemed to be Sophia’s first gym battle, and already the bar was raised quite high — higher than Aedre’s current level, at least.

When the match was announced by the referee, Aedre clapped respectfully for the winning gym leader. Rather than looking happy or proud with his victory, Lan Sohai seemed rather pensive. Before Aedre could point that out to Rheese and Alex, Sophia was taking off through the entrance of the gym.

“Sophia!” Aedre called, hopping down from the stands and giving chase to the girl. Having just suffered a defeat, the brunette was probably in a rather agitated state and therefore prone to rash decisions and conclusions about herself. She needed alone time, but she also needed a friend or someone she could talk to after she got over the initial shock. Or at least that’s what I’d need, Aedre thought as she followed the girl out the gym.

Solanna Delacloude

Outskirts of Mesalon

Solanna cracked up laughing. "They're already good at teamwork, by the looks of it," she commented. "And I'm sure you'll do great. Just..." She paused, a more serious look settling over her face. "Be careful out there."

She whirled around as, out of the corner of her eye, she saw somebody. A distressed-looking brunette, ruffles and ribbons flapping as she ran along the path. Her skin sported many bruises, as well as bandages here and there. Another girl rushed after her, a blonde, seemingly older than her.

"Ah!" Solanna stared ahead. "What happened?" From the look of the brunette, she was likely to have been one of the people in the hospital earlier. One of the people caught up in the Team Noble incident.

Sophia Danvers

Mesalon Gym -> Outskirts of Mesalon

@fer1323 @Dusksong

Even as the newcomer called her name, Sophia ran.

A simple loss would have been bad enough, but getting completely and utterly crushed in front of everyone was quite another. She could feel her face heating up, her body trembling.

She couldn't let her weakness show any more than she just had. She had to pull herself together. She was meant to be disciplined, self-controlled, like she'd tried to become over the years... But there were so many things she was meant to be, and so many things she wasn't.

As she came to a corner, she slowed, panting. Her sides had flared up, and a scab on her knee was pulling badly. She leaned against a wall, still shuddering, as the blonde girl caught up with her.

"I'm fine," Sophia insisted. She didn't need this. She didn't need to be pitied.

She raised her head at another voice asking what had happened. A woman in her early twenties, with bright red hair and a floral blouse, looked at her in alarm. At the sight of the person next to her, Sophia cringed.

The last person she wanted to see her in her current state was Oscar.
