I am probably going to submit you the history before I wrestle with anything beyond what I already have.  It's almost done.  They're teens, where I'm writing currently.

Also they're German, and I checked timelines.  They leave Germany during the depression, before Hitler and the Nazis take power, though the political group is definitely gaining in influence.
