Would a Military man who's brother is a UFO conspiracy "nut" be acceptable? 

The further expanded idea would be (let call him Joe for now) Joe wants to reconnect with his estranged brother. His brother believes in UFOs and governmental cover-ups. In order to better understand his brother Joe joins an online group for believers. He gets invited to the convention and decides [i]what the hell[/i] and goes.
