I had wondered where you had disappeared to, @Carantathraiel. And yes, people find numerous ways to make themselves sick, even in this day and age.

I have a lovely immune system, thankfully. All the flu patients that came through this month? No thank you.

What amazes me is that anyone contracts the flu whatsoever anymore, but I suppose there are those who do not receive their immunizations or are willing to work when they feel ill, especially during seasons of sickness. And you best be around more, @Carantathraiel! I missed this topic.

Even with immunizations, sometimes people can still get the flu. Sometimes it just slips through the cracks of the armour, you know?
Plus there are those crazies who think all vaccines are bad.

@The Harbinger of FerocityI don't get flu shots for several reasons. 1) I don't like shots (I'm a wuss). 2) Flu shots are based on projections of the previous year's flu virus and do not cover a large percentage of the actual virus mutations (influenza evolves pretty quickly). 3) Flu shots are about as liable to get you sick as being in contact with someone who has the flu. Yeah, they say it's "dead," but I've known too many people who immediately get sick after having a shot for it to just be a coincidence. Also 4), I come into contact with very few people, so I'm not too worried about getting the flu. Maine is pretty isolated.

That said, I'm not anti-vacc by any means. Or anti-flu shot. The flu shot is extremely useful for those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, infants, new mothers, and those with auto-immune diseases (I'm not trained medically, so I could be wrong with that last one). It's just not something I choose to take. Not trying to start an argument, just figured I would point out the other side's position.

I was aware they do not counter every strain, but they are, at least in their current incarnation designed to help stimulate the natural immune response to a heightened level and encode it with the likely threats it is facing. With regard to the people who become ill after receiving them, that is a fairly normal response that they receive a very mild case of the illness or similar effect. It really depends upon the culture used as some are still partially alive but in limited quantities or are sterilized and dead as you said. I have still managed to never fall ill to it; the last thing that I was actually incapacitated by was poisoning, which was an interesting experience to say the least.

Either way I, as someone forced to spend extended periods with people much to my chagrin, am not fond of people being ill ever and am just fairly unsympathetic to begin with. The sort of scenario where I find myself asking, "Why are you here when you are sick? All you are going to do is contaminate everything and force me to clean it twice in one day."

And yes, I am one of those who avoid hospitals not because of any distrust of medicine, something I am somewhat trained in, but because there are ill people there and the atmosphere is exceedingly unsettling.

I also don't like going to hospitals and avoid it whenever possible. Or really any place that is "clinical" in nature, with the stark white walls and prison-like structures... Although I'm sure some actual clinics are fairly comfortable.
