Hobnob's only consolation was that a letter from Doctor Diminutive had arrived that told Hobnob that Secret had been found. The letter also said that even though Doctor Diminutive would only need to apply 20 leaches at most, Haukford still refused medical treatment from the gnomish doctor.

Ever since few weeks before he was inducted into Kayden's mercenary band, Hobnob had been playing around with an idea for a firearm capable of firing even when wet. Such a thing would be accomplished by making this gun fire bullets by hitting them out of the barrel really really hard with a tiny hammer, rather than igniting a small amount of gunpowder to launch the bullet out with the resulting explosion.
