The fluorescent lights flickered on-off, on-off, over and over above the twin-sized bed, continuously fighting for life until, finally, all effort was lost, and the room dimmed. Jakob rose suddenly, the little light that seeped through his thin window illuminating the room in a cool blue, white tiles on the floor cracked and broken here and there. He knew that they were out in the hall, probably fiddling with whatever object they could reach. Jack stared at the door for several moments, contemplating to himself about whatever had been on his mind earlier. Finally, he grabbed at the keys that were carefully laid beneath his mattress, and opened the door, a slight amount of surprise recognizing that it hadn't been locked from the outside. Jack looked left, then right, then saw Roseanne sitting on the counter of where the nurses would have been working behind, but weren't today. Further down the hall, Joseph was playing hopscotch with himself on the tiles, merrily skipping about as he clicked, one foot, click, another, all the way to where Jack and Roseanne were. Joseph tugged a bit at Roseanne's blouse, pulling her down and over to Jack, where they quietly stood for a moment. Jack rose his free hand, stopped, then ruffled the imaginary boy's hair. A small giggle escaped Roseanne's tiny mouth, and they walked together down the hall. With each step, the keys by Jack's side jangled in only the slightest, the sound bouncing off around down the hallway, filling the silence with a distinct, sharp, ching, ching. Where were they going? Nowhere, in particular, but Jack recalled a nurse saying a good while ago that there were supposedly gardens here, and gardens seemed a bit more interesting than a small, cold room where the only thing one could do is lay and sleep.
