Name: Anathagos Vain Age: 42 Sex: M Race: Human, Marked by the Three Sisters Appearance: A short man, neither thin nor stocky, with the pale skin of a Northman, marred with the tell-tale pockmarks of a plague survivor. His dark hair is fading to grey at the temples, and his faced is bisected by a jagged scar that proceeds from the right corner of his mouth across his cheek, reaching almost to his temple. His eyes are very pale grey, and he usually wears a black tunic or jerkin. Personality: A quiet, soft spoken man, courteous, unflappable and with a dry sense of humor. Calculating, ruthless and often contemptuous of the high born lordlings whom he serves, Vain nevertheless is far from bloodthirsty, and knows that mercy and restraint can often be as useful as fear and violence. Biography: Not much is known about Vain, but much is whispered and speculated. Some say he came to Venara as child, a prisoner on a slave ship, others that he was a mercenary in the far North, before being hired by old Lord Perfori. Others say that he is a sorcerer or skin changer in service to the Umbra or some dark, forgotten elven god. Whatever the truth of his origins, he was the former Patron's left hand for almost the entire length of his term in office. Vain's tenure under the late Patron was impressive- his network of informants, thieves and assassins and his combination of ruthlessness and restraint helped to keep the tenuous peace that held under Perfori's reign, and he built a formidable reputation for himself. But he could not stop the plague... After Pefori's death, Vain offered his services to Lord Delorano, who never quite trusted the spymaster but who had few enough allies in the chaos that followed the plague. Vain worked with Delorano to unmask the shadowy forces that ultimately would take the Patriarch's life. His failure to outwit his hidden adversaries gnaws at him, and what little he knows of the forces at work behind the gilded facade of Venaran politics deeply disturbs him. He has decided to offer his services to Delorano's heir and protect the House's interests as he pursue's the Patriarch's murderers.
