Welcome to Star Trek: Shattered Mirrors. We aim for this to be a small group game that follows a Cadet Cruise for Starfleet Academy Cadets that finds itself in a dimension of space and time few have ever crossed into. the Mirror Universe. A dimension that is a dark reflection of the universe our characters know, pushing each Cadet to their limit, and perhaps past it as they look into mirrored versions of themselves. United Federation of Planets Starfleet vs United Empire of Planets Starfleet.

The Dominion War presented the greatest threat to life as humanoids in explored space have known it in history. It pitted an overwhelming foe mysterious in nature bent on conquest against the combined might of the Federation, Klingon, and Romulan civilizations. Though the Alpha Quadrant allies would prevail against the Dominion, it would not be without a very high cost to all involved. 

In the aftermath of near armageddon, the rebuild was by many estimates an even greater undertaking than the winning of the great war itself. In its retrospection of the strategies and tactics, Starfleet Command came to the conclusion that it must begin to prepare for the inevitably of another such great armed conflict. 

A program of starship design and starship construction unparalleled in Starfleet’s history was initiated, including a focus on not just Science and Exploration, the historic main focus of Starfleet starship design and construction, but an added focus on defensive capabilities. In addition the curriculum of Starfleet Academy was changed, a new emphasis on martial subjects and importance placed on the Cadet Squadron structure. Now nearly every Cadet goes through a Squadron in their last year before graduation.

The Advanced Tactical Training program was re-built from the ground up with lessons learned from the Dominion War, front line veterans of the war being tasked as Special Instructors to produce a new generation of more defensive capable Starfleet Officers. Graduates of the A.T.T. program are expected to be head and shoulders more capable than other Academy grads; the Cadet Cruises of the A.T.T. more demanding, more dangerous, and always live fire real missions in real Federation space, not the comfy confines of a holodeck.

Imperial historians often place the true decline of the Terran Empire at the point in which a trick of fate introduced the Alternate James T. Kirk to the Imperial Universe I.S.S. Enterprise. It was AU Kirk that’s believed to have planted the seeds of “reform” in Imperial Commander Spock. It’s generally believed it was the reforms to soften, many Imperial historians say neuter, the Terran Empire that allowed the catastrophe of what would follow: the Great War. 

Moving away from a focus on conquest and to a focus of exploration and cooperation began the decades long decay of the Terran Empire’s battle readiness and efficiency. When the rest of the Alpha Quadrant began to sense weakness in the once dominant Terran Empire, historic enemies began to speak of alliance, with the shared goal of overthrowing their Terran Empire masters and creating a new order in the Quadrant. 

The Alliance of Cardassian and Klingon empires attacked Earth, catching the unprepared Terran Empire flat footed. The Great War that followed was well fought by both sides, but the gains won by the Alliance early on was enough to doom the Terran Empire. In a short two years Earth was under Alliance control, the terrans of Earth now a slave species, instead of the master species that had been throughout the Alpha Quadrant for so long. 

The Alliance stranglehold wouldn’t last long; the beginning of their end sparking when the Terran Rebellion began under Ben Sisko and Smiley O’Brien, furthered in terms of leadership, and more importantly technology, with the return of the I.S.S. Voyager. Voyager was long thought lost, and instead of destroyed had been thrown into the mysterious Gamma Quadrant, where they fought through countless perils to return to the Alpha Quadrant. Warlord Janeway took power of the Rebellion after the death of Sisko, the technology of Voyager combining with the distrust and infighting of the Cardassians and Klingons within their own shared empire to bring about a true balanced fight between the powers.

The Rebellion’s success hinged not on simply Janeway’s leadership, but the leadership of a pre-First Contact humanoid and his crew discovered floating in stasis far off in the Gamma Quadrant: Khan Noonien Singh. It was Khan and his crew that finally won the Rebellion the day against the Alliance. On Earth Imperial Starfleet Command was rebuilt, Warlord Janeway becoming the Empress of the new Empire. When Empress Janeway revealed her plans to reinstate the Terran Empire, it was Singh who declared it folly: they would only be strong when they allowed the strongest of all species to rise to the top of a new Empire, not simply any terran. When Janeway dismissed Singh, the augmented terran and his crew quickly overthrew the new Empress from within the Imperial Palace days before her coronation.

On coronation day the United Empire of Planets was officially decreed, with Emperor Khan Noonien Singh crowned it’s leader.

Black Squad did not begin as the elite training squadron of the ATT; that reputation was forged after the revamp of the ATT. The pet squadron of CMC Rosk, rumor has it Master Chief bet Senior Chief Mattox and Academy Commandant Rear Admiral Tuvok an incredibly rare 'war trophy' from the Shinzon Incident kept in Academy Archives that the middling graded Black Squadron would beat their chosen squads in the Starfleet Academy Annual War Games. The two agreed to Master Chief's bet, and Rosk spent the next half year personally overseeing much of Black Squad's training and field missions. 

The result? Black Squad not only beat Senior Chief Mattox and Admiral Tuvok's chosen squads, but they beat out every training squadron in the Academy for the Commandant's Cup. Immediately after the games the Jolly Rogers were sent on a mission to patrol the Rigel system's infamous economic corridor, reports of heavy Rigellion pirate recent activity prompting Master Chief to select the highly performing Black Squad for the task. The result was a success, if only in name, the patrol resulted in several tactical victories against lone pirate vessels before Black Squad's [i]USS Challenger[/i] was ambushed by a collective force of pirates larger than any pirate fleet in living memory. [i]The Challenger[/i], and Black Squad, would come out on top--but the cost was incredibly high. Supervising Officer Senior Chief Thoros and one Cadet died in the action, several other Black Squad Cadets medically discharged following wounds resulting from the ambush. 

The losses from the Rigellion Ambush, as well as natural attrition from senior Cadets graduating the ATT program, resulted in a near empty Black Squad. Of the few left Cadet Lorelei was named by CMC Rosk as the new Cadet Captain of Black Squad. ATT, and the Academy as a whole, is abuzz with rumors of some secret project the Jolly Rogers and their [i]Challenger[/i] have been locked away under the tightest security on Academy grounds to complete.

The Defiant Class was originally stated to be a Heavy Escort by Utopia Planitia's Advanced Starship Design Bureau, though privately Starfleet Command's intent was the first true warship ever designed by Starfleet. The Defiant project began in 2366 in direct response to the increased Borg threat but quickly found itself as a vital frontline starship used extensively and in a multitude of roles during the Dominion War. After the Dominion War the political resistance to openly designing warships had dissipated, the Federation at large acknowledging a need to re-arm itself with future threats in mind. 

To that end, the Sao Paulo Project began even before the end of the Dominion War. Utilizing many technologies developed, or reverse engineered, during the Dominion War. Instead of a simple refit of the Heavy Escort Defiant, ASDB designated the Sao Paulo Sub-Class a Tactical Escort--the first time Starfleet openly intended to design and build a warship. The Sao Paolo Sub-Class features improved defensive and offensive capabilities. The first production of the Tactical Escort was not to the Fleet Operations, however, it was to Starfleet Academy; the revamped Advanced Tactical Training program intended to use them as frontline, live fire, trainers. In the short history of Sub-Class' run with the A.T.T., it has provided itself more than capable in the hands of war veteran Instructors and inexperienced Cadet Crew alike. 

The [i]USS Challenger[/i] goes further. Immediately after a bloody incident against Rigellion pirates and [i]the Challenger[/i] that cost A.T.T. the life of one Cadet, and the medical discharge of several more critically injured/maimed Cadets, A.T.T. Lead Instructor and Command Master Chief Eso directed A.T.T.'s Cadet Squadron Six to begin secret and off-the-record refits of the [i]USS Challenger[/i], under the direction of Black Squadron Cadet Captain Lorelei, with Commander Geordi La Forge acting as unofficial ASDB quality control for the project. Everything from the ship's power plant, to defensive and offensive technologies, to sensors, to increased recreational technologies have been refit.
