[color=8493ca]"You have quite a store of latent talent yourself, but you can't quite tap into it. Do you know why that may be?"[/color] He continued. While Sophia's use of telepathy may have made it look like he was talking to himself, he really didn't mind. 

It was more important that Sophia understood what was holding her back, even if she didn't answer him at all. That kind of self reflection would probably set her on the right path. Her becoming a more powerful psychic was secondary to her growth as a trainer, even Ray (as lazy as he was) knew that. 

As for why he took such an interest, Sophia reminded him of someone he had known a long time ago. Even that burning envy that emanated from her reminded him of when he learned that strong emotion was a dangerous thing to mix with Psychic power.
