I have considered refluffing and repurposing the Stone Sorcery archetype for the sorcerer, [@JBRam2002]. While it is not my go to, it might work just as well if someone is set to playing a druid, given it has a frontline focus and the ability to ward damage off from its allies. The primary reason I was looking to the druid was for its Wild Shape, but that is mostly because I enjoy its myriad of feline company it keeps. As for Intelligence based spellcasting, the line never had much draw for me, primarily because I am partial to force of self and insight based characters, Charisma and Wisdom respectively. The only reason I did not mention my desire to play a paladin is because I have already played two in recent times, to which I can confirm that your statement is entirely accurate. The first few levels, up to about fifth I would say, are not particularly notable, but the class itself is not only strong but rewarding.
