Honestly, I feel like the flaw in your elves defense plan was that you played to the Orcs strengths in actually engaging them in battle rather then playing to your own as worshipers of a god of craftsmen. 

For example, two [url]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheval_de_frise[/url] along the river where you had planned your ambush would have been more then enough to help funnel the orcs into a killing zone for your archers... if you wanted to be really clever you could have added another one under the water of the river itself and given the first bunch of orcs into the water something [i]fun[/i] to run smack dab into.
