I dunno, magical girls always seemed like a specifically "modern" thing if that makes sense? Since when you think about it, at it's most basic level it's kind of just a bright and cheerful take on urban fantasy. Placing it in a historical setting feels like it would change it from urban fantasy to just straight up fantasy, if that makes sense. ...I'm choked up and delirious with a cold right now so if that's a bit hard to follow that's why. ^^;
I kinda understand what you are getting at, the magical girl genre at its core really seemed to be more about adding onto the more mundane, humdrum life that people are familiar with. You take the genre outside of the 'modern' world and its no longer about the possibilities and potential of people. Also a lot of magical girl type stories are centered around a certain theme that a modern age person can relate to and understand, along with the challenges that go with it in a modern society. You take the modern setting out and then the audience can no longer closely relate to the characters and so the magical girl genre just morphs into a magical fantasy setting. The reason the magical girl genre is so popular is because of how people can often relate to the characters and therefore think that they too, can also have the potential for so much more. Anyway if you can think of a decent plot I'll show my interest to be sure. Hmm, I might look at some older ideas I had in the past while I'm at it...
