}
The keys rattled in the door, Cardlin letting out a 'tsk' of frustration when the door refused to budge. A few good shoves with his shoulder and a kick for good measure finally had the wooden object swinging open with an omnious creak, Cardlin wincing at the sound. As he tossed his keys in the bowl sitting on the stand by the door, he made a mental note to go after the hinges on that door with some WD-40. That creak never failed to send shivers down his spine; it was almost as bad as nail on a chalk board. But then again, any burglar that tried to break in would be announced by that creaky door so maybe he should keep it in favor as an alarm. Sighing, he kicked off his shoes by the door and carded his fingers through his messy mop that passed for hair. "I'm home!" He called, silence greeting him. Cain was off at work, per usual and Cardlin probably wouldn't see him for a few days. As he made his way to the kitchen to grab a snack, he whipped out his phone and sent a text to Sophie, letting her know he was safe and sound. She always tended to worry quite a bit when it came to him. > I've made it home safe and sound. No burglars or axe murders waiting for me. We're still on for this weekend, yeah? The second season of that show we really love airs and I definitely don't want to miss it. He tucked his phone away and entered the kitchen, scrounging around in the fridge. He finally settled on a sandwich and munched on it as he gazed at the doors of the fridge. Seems like Cain had left a grocery list before he left this morning. Cardlin would stop by on his way home tomorrow. Sandwich now safe in his stomach he made himself a steaming cup of tea and carried it to his favorite spot in the apartment: the window sill. It had a built in seat and Cardlin loved to sit there and sketch as he gazed out of the window at the town before him. His sketch pad still rested where he had left it last night and so he set his mug on the end table nearby and flipped to his recent sketch. It wasn't anything grand, just a sketch of the view before him. He hummed to himself as he continued to add buildings, movements become fluid and almost second nature as his mind wandered. In fact, it wandered so much that his eyes began to droop and the pencil stopped moving, slipping from his limp hand to roll onto the set beside him. He could feel his mind growing fuzzy as the darkness welcomed him with open arms...
His eyes blinked open to the same, familiar gray he's grow to know his entire life. But hold on...This wasn't the apartment. Cardlin sat upright, feeling the grass tickle his hands and bare feet. He glanced down at himself, finding that he was dressed in soft cotton pants and a shirt, both white in color. Next he took stock of his surroundings. He was currently seat in a patch of grass and as he stood, he saw a winding path lead away from him and around a boulder. Curious despite himself, Cardlin stood and began following the path. Soon he came across a lake, the water smooth as glass and surround by mountains on all sides. A small dock lead out onto the water, a boat tied to a post as if waiting for a captain. Cardlin could feel his eyes wide in awe at the beauty that surrounded him. He couldn't tell what time of day it was but the peaks of the mountain's were obscured by clouds and the far end of the lake had a light fog drifting about. Unable to help himself, Cardlin strode over to the end of the dock and sat down, dipping his feet into the cool water as he continued to gaze about himself in wonder. His fingers itched, yearning for a camera or sketch pad so he could capture the magnificent view laid before him.
