Sure, but how do north and east interact if I am trying to go from one to the other? Do I need to travel into center to be able to jump over, or does north j1 connect to east j1, as if it were a folded cube, for example? I mean, I dig it either way, I am a big fan of over complicating things, personally. As you may recall, I asked about moving on a third axis previously because we are now in space, which would make things very confusing and overly complicated, we'll just have 10million clarification questions about movement again and then we'll be back up and running.
You could just place a gate in between to signify the area is just an extension, or zero out some squares to show you can't go there. Maybe there's a narrow path of only two squares somewhere, so all other squares on that row would be black. If you're trying to go diagonal, you could either place a gate icon in between to show that that area's connected or you can not do it to show it's not. Pretty simple as long as you give enough visual feedback. It's not that hard in all honesty.
