I'm going to say that the national insignia stay, but there are operational ID markings and other stencils as part of the Expeditionary Force applied elsewhere too. 
From what I understand from reading about accounts of units in the field and on combat operations, regs for markings and colours tend to end up a bit relaxed by necessity after a while, so it's probably a case of making sure something works in the field and can be done easily several times.
