OH MY GOD LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY CHARACTER

Ahem. Ship's cook! Giant Caterpillar-ish Thing! Lives on a diet of paper and cardboard! Best friend to all! Adorable and terrifying! Not a particularly talented cook, but makes up for it with enthusiasm! Might be infested with some kind of parasite!

He's cute, reminds me of the caterpillar in a bug's life lol. Fun & useless fact: when i was a kid i called them callepitars (idk why i switched the t and ll) and nobody ever corrected me so i didnt know the proper word until i was like 13, shit you not lol. I still call them callepitars sometimes

An alien spy (not human, but also not a giant space caterpillar, that would be ridiculous*, so humanish, might be basing this race on the Changelings from Eberron), retained by the captain to keep an eye on the crew and to provide intelligence work off the ship when needed.

If the spy/agent place is taken, I'll move onto something else happily enough. I was pondering using an eloquently spoken pathological liar human girl with cybernetic enhancements in that position, but that's just one of many.

Helmsman/Pilot: steers the ship, ideally while sober

I meant to mention this before, but the parasite I brought up actually controls the insect's behavior via its nervous system, before eventually releasing its spores by exploding out of its head, killing it. Here's the wiki.

Yikes.

I think I prefer the extended neoteny that puts off metamorphosis and causes constant growth sort of parasite for the Ship's Cook, rather than the fungal parasite that explodes out the heads of poor caterpillars.

While food may not be required for all characters, a test of your loyalty to the ship, Captain, and a sign that you are not also secretly a spy will obviously be eating at least three full servings of Caterpillar cooked food.

All as part of the "death to other spies" initiative of the spymaster.

You could be extra badass and have the parasite protect its host with some sort of combatant abilities.


I was thinking that it might generally be good for making the Cook rather tough, rather than particularly "fighty"; the Cook's fighting style should probably be a sort of vaguely aggressive flopping on people in the hope of crushing them.

But... robots don't have stomachs...


It's quite alright, if there's a mouth part that you can shove things into, that's close enough, right?
