I could be wrong, but I recall reading that the Nova Dawn was designed to support a crew of less than twenty (I would go back and check this, but my tablet is playing "[i]Chrome is not responding. Do you want to close it?[/i]" chicken with me every ninety seconds, which makes trying to go through a thread a needlessly exciting experience), so it'd seem likely to me that if he's been on the ship for a few months, everyone will know him first hand!

Or, in the case of crew members without hands, they're free to substitute "hand" for their appendage of choice.
