Nao Miyoshi · 18 · Female Justice Arcana Appearance: While shorter than the majority of her compatriots, the authoritative manner in which the 5'3" Nao carries herself makes it difficult to mistake her for younger than she really is. Her facial structure hints at the Mediterranean origins of her great-grandfather, and while not overtly pretty, can be described as rather fair. She is in possession of a slight tan due to her history of sporting and constant exercise, which has also provided her with an athletic figure. Her confident gaze is a dark brown, a shade also shared by her hair. It is sometimes tied back into a ponytail, revealing her forehead and accentuating her serious-looking eyebrows, but in recent years she has preferred to simply let it floof down. Nao's attire exudes simplicity and/or professionalism, with her closet filled with multitudes of white dress shirts, suits and trousers as well as some t-shirts, a sweater and a dress or two for more casual situations. Also in her possession are a number of red ties, although she prefers to wear them only if the situation requires it. She has three sets of footwear - blue runners for casual situations, black dress shoes for the more formal, and brown boots for whenever they are absolutely necessary. While she has no favoured outfit, she wears a gunmetal grey rubber bracelet and a watch on her left arm at all times. Personality: An intense and highly determined individual, Nao's defining trait has always been her workalcoholism. She takes her duties very seriously, committed to ensuring that they are performed to perfection no matter the cost. So extreme is her short-sighted dedication that she would (and has in the past done so) ignore her own health and safety in order to complete all the work she has taken upon herself to do. People rightfully call her insane for risking herself in such a manner, yet while she has acknowledged the truth behind their words, still continues to do so, only ever stopping if forcibly dragged away. When not absorbed in her work, however, Nao can be rather easygoing. Although the tense, authoritarian aura that envelops her suggests that she is a stickler for the rules and commands of superiors, she is surprisingly rebellious if she feels that her interpretation of a law is more just and reasonable. She strongly believes that all should act in accordance to justice and the pursuit of the truth. Another of her beliefs is of giving others a second-chance; the teenage girl is a forgiving person, even if one has wronged her in some manner. There is a strong sense of compassion within her, and even though she lacks many friends, is immensely sociable. Nao is also an avid fan of the sports (more specifically: hockey, lacrosse and athletic events), frequently keeping up with any news and criticising any unwise decisions that are made. She enjoys her position on the university's track team, usually spending some time running laps. Her other hobbies include reading, and she is in possession of an eclectic taste in books. While some may think otherwise due to her interests, she is far from unintelligent; constantly excelling in academic pursuits. She deeply respects those who uphold the law, which is why she is diligently throwing all that she has into succeeding in her university coursework. However, there are times when Nao may act in a highly unusual and erratic fashion, a result of sleep deprivation. In this state, she suffers from wild mood swings, and her already-existing extremities are bolstered to even higher levels (such as her workalcoholism, which usually also brings about this madness). Dangerous to both herself and others, she is far more irrational and impulsive than usual, and coupled with the health risks associated with a lack of sleep, it is clear that she is essentially self-destructing through her desire to work, to do everything perfectly. She wants everything to be well-ordered, and will take on all the responsibility upon herself if necessary. Background: Nao's childhood was an inconspicuous one. She was born in Hakodate, a city in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, where she spent the first seven years of her life. Her days in the portside city were simple, playing with her fellow children in a park near her family’s apartment every day. It was an enjoyable time for the young girl, a time that improved as she partook in her first year of primary school. Yet it was not to last, for in the middle of her second year, her paternal grandfather, a distant figure to her, died, forcing her father and their family to move to Kantou City. She had not understood the reasonings behind the resettlement at first, forever complaining to her parents about now living in her father’s hometown. She soon grew used to her new living conditions, a result that mainly stemmed from the presence of her uncle, one of the city’s local police officers. The young Nao idolised him, constantly nagging him for stories of his time on the force. She saw him as a role model, the physical embodiment of all that was good in her new home. His influence provided her with the dream of becoming a member of law enforcement, inspiring her with a new drive. As the years passed, she continued to respect his dedication to protecting the city’s citizens, and she took to her work with gusto in order to emulate him. In her middle school years, Nao ended up joining several sports clubs, and somehow found herself as the captain of her school’s incredibly lacklustre hockey team. As the only competent player, she was forced to reduce much of her free time to help improve her teammates, setting the tone of the rest of her schooling life. It was from her precarious balancing act of schoolwork, club responsibilities and other things that intensified her workaholism, and the habit of disregarding her own health in order to perform what she deemed necessary. Her grades during this period of life suffered, and as the years went on the stress continued to chip away at her, finally coming to a head a month prior to her graduation. She had made only one friend in her time at middle school, but a particularly heated spat (a result of her increasing snappiness) completely shattered their bond. Her friend would later depart Kantou for greener pastures, and Nao would make her first steps into the local high school with great regrets. For a time, she sought to distance herself from every other student, throwing herself even further into her work to escape the pain of having been, in her eyes, such a failure during her middle school years. She joined the student council, took on a part-time job and participated in as many clubs as possible, becoming little more than a machine that ran on inertia. It took a breakdown at the end of her second year to force her to reorient herself, and soon enough she began to open up again, trying to relax and embrace happiness. That is not to say, however, that her flaws have left her. Even now, as a student of criminal justice at Kantou University, Nao struggles to balance her own personal needs with her work, her constant desire to do more still a major obstacle in her life.
