The Guardians of Death follow the Avatar. Which is insane and has an intense desire to kill, well, [i]everything[/i]. Vestec wants people to start going after the artifacts of death, so he spread the legend that if you collect all of them and bring them to the vault, an undead army of super killers will be yours. The only catch is that you have to kill the Avatar first. 

I'm sure Farxus could just hide from the Avatar with magic. Make it think he's dead or something. It's not terribly bright. But 'You smell like my dead master' bit won't work for the bloodlust insane mechanical monstrosity.
