History: He used to work in the library on Corruscant, until a rich family brought in a memory crystal which contained information on the old Je'daii order which the Jedi were an offshoot from.  An ancestor had found it over two thousand years earlier at a dig on Typhon.  Within the crystal he found teachings which conflicted with the teachings of the Jedi, as they taught people to seek balance between the light and dark sides of the force.

Since he had heard of the return of the Sith he had been looking into the differences between the two and different Force traditions.  Of course the Jedi severally limited what padawans could learn about these other traditions, but now he had full access to the teachings of one.  These teachings spoke to him, as he saw the war as a consequence of those differences, and it taught that imbalances in the Force caused problems, especially on Typhon.  Of course, Typhon was lost long ago, but he could copy the contents of the crystal and study it.
When he voiced his thoughts on the need for balance, and that Anakin Skywalker wouldn't bring balance by destroying the Sith, the masters ordered him to meditate on why he was "falling from the light", ending his duties in the library.  They tried to remove his access to these "dark side" teachings, but he had other copies, including having the data encoded into his light saber crystal.
