Admittedly I've not read too much lately, in fact I bought the Mass Effect trilogy and have been playing though all of that but that is unrelated.

Regarding books while not recent, I did read a nifty three, maybe four(can't recall off the top of my head) series about a group, I think a cohort, of romans plus one Gaul getting magically transported to a world of magic and fantasy. Mild fantasy, no elves or giant animals, but still pretty cool I'd say. I believe the name of the series was the Videssos cycle, with the first book being[i] The Misplaced Legion[/i]
