Kili's character doesn't have to be exact. We both can picture him as the baby of the family, who only wishes to do what's right. He might not be doing justice right now, but that is kind of the tone in the third movie. As it goes on, he will develop into a serious, slightly mature individual, who will possibly find his destiny along the way.
Let's just say that, through Saeril, he will be able to learn a thing or two, almost like a pupil; almost like a son, since he's completely devoted to her, and that he would do anything to protect her.
See, it's all about character development. He doesn't have to be an exact canon; he would be more of an 'OC-Canon', if you know what I mean. You're allowed to add traits to him as we go on :)
Now, if you barely remember the third film, that's why I post clips. Like the one I just recently posted in the OOC, which shows where we currently are in the story. All I can say is, follow my lead :)
