[@Grim Fandango] I may be in the minority here, but it would be interesting to have a random power. It would mean that your characters would have to be adapting to something that may or may not suit their past and personality. 

I can see how choosing would make it easier to develop a history, unless the powers are really recent then the history would need to omit any power being present until we are given one.
