And yeah, considering the amount of liberties we've taken so far and how inevitable it was that most of our gems would appear in the show eventually, I'd say it's reasonable to just say that Aqua is an unusual variant.  It isn't unfeasible that some gems would be different sizes/shapes though, just look at the Amethysts.
