The power one gains as a Daybreaker isn't gained through a dramatic event. There's a process to go through that involves getting a vestige planted in you, having her compatibility and ability to create a Cowl and Crown confirmed, before THEN going through all the crap of having her body Corrupted. Only at that final stage would she be able to gain the ability to freeze things.

If she wasn't a Daybreaker before her parents got ganked by Tyrants, they all would have just died. Really, it's a miracle that a pair of salvagers survived long enough to have a child old enough to bring with them on their trips.
