I suppose nothing brings the living closer to the dead than treading on the edge of the blade, so it would not be unacceptable for the dead to respond to those that reach out. 

"I have never encountered the dead myself, but I do not doubt their existence. I have watched people willingly die terrible deaths in the spirit of honor, and time after time I have cleaned the great white stones of their blood. Their bodies are buried alongside their comrades, and I assume they linger the memorials until the next show. Perhaps there's some enjoyment in it for all.
