The city’s atmosphere remained heavy and broken when they returned. Only now a hushed scuffling replaced the wailing of scared players, the sound of people still unable to accept their fate drifting aimlessly. The knot in the pit of Kajin’s stomach tighten painfully again and he forced himself to let out the breath he inadvertently held. Outside of the dread that permeated Genesis, Kajin managed to work some of the anxiety out of his system. They succeeded in completing the quest, handling it at a steady and safe pace while they got a hang of the system. Or at least while he adjusted. Dirk seemed to step into his role without a moment of hesitation and Aster, despite claiming inexperience, seemed right at home slaying the beasts. Even he, after a few trigger happy heals – ‘Stupid, what a waste. You know better.’ he chastised himself-, stopped shaking at all and relaxed a bit. With the action and spell system as streamlined as it was, maintaining his view of the party and the field was relatively easy. He managed to loosen the worry building up inside him quite a bit. But the city brought it all back. Outisde during the quest, Kajin focused on monitoring the surrounding area after the initial pull. Warning Aster and Dirk as other boars strayed too close, his main goal was checking for possible area boss spawns. Some games triggered major enemies to punish players that were over killing or stall higher level players from killing things meant for new players. Kajin wasn’t sure if that happened here but he wasn’t going to discredit the possibility until he knew for sure. With that in mind, he was rather jumpy for the majority of the fight, sticking close to Dirk when he thought he noticed something. Instead of what he expected, he found something much more exciting. Other players. Other people who had escaped the suffocating atmosphere of the city and decided to move forward despite the constant threat of death hanging above them. They seemed much more aggressive than his plan, reckless honestly, but they held their own with ease. He smiled as they took on their own quarries and he turned his attention back to his team. The creatures were relatively low leveled so it didn’t take much time to deal with them thankfully. Though his over eager healing did cost him all of his mana at the end. That was something he’d have to work on. “What do you say we pack it up for the evening? I could really use something to eat! Plus, I may be out of mana…” Kajin smiled sheepishly, “A tad trigger happy I guess.” Thankfully, Dirk and Aster agreed and they slipped back into Genesis. Dread worked its way back into Kajin and the slight trembling started up again. These were just level one enemies. They were easy. Everything else was going to be a hundred times more difficult. There was no way they were going to escape unharmed. It just wasn’t possible. No way they were making it out- ‘I just need to keep busy. That’s all.’ Kajin thought to himself as he accepted the quest rewards. ‘I can go make myself some new clothes and pick up a first aid kit then have a meal and a bath. That sounds like a plan.’ Promising to meet up for dinner in a small inn, he slipped away from them to give himself some time alone and made his purchases. Minus the first aid kit. 100 ren for a first aid kit? It would have cost everything he had. As much as he wanted it, food was a priority so he looked at it longingly before instead purchasing an extra piece of cloth for Aster’s armor. She probably wouldn’t have enough to buy armor after this quest so he would give her something for now. Plus it would help with his tailoring skill so it was a win-win situation. He headed back to Dirk and Aster and happily ordered Fish and Chips and water, tacked on a room for a night and a bath later, and stared at the Renn display in his inventory. 17 Renn for the night. Kajin let out a low whistle. “We need to find a source of income other than quests if we want to actually do more than just survive here.” He muttered to Aster and Dirk. “This stuff is expensive. Hopefully dungeons generate a ton more Renn.” He tore through his food. It tasted just like the real world. Even the quiet depression that suffocating the tavern failed to steal away the comforting pleasure food provided. He finished quickly and, despite wanting another plate, decided his pockets wouldn’t appreciate that very much. So instead he pulled out the cloth and his sewing kit and started working on Aster’s armor. “You know guys although we’re in a death trap and probably condemned to dying, this place still takes my breath away. The realism of the food, the NPCs, and everything else is astounding!” He slid the cloth onto the small hoop and started passing the needle back and forth through it. After ten passes, it shone brightly for a few moments before forming into a plain black shirt and pants, with thicker areas over vital areas. He inspected it before it vanished into his inventory. “Alrighty Aster, here is a little something. Not much but like I said better than nothing.” He opened a trade request, “I’d try my hand at leather armor but I’m not quite sure I have the level for it honestly.” A group entered the tavern. Unlike the rest of the players, these people seemed… wait. Kajin recognized them immediately. They were out on the boar quest as well! With a larger party they could head out to dungeons quicker than just the three of them! He called them over and started to introduce Dirk, Aster, and himself. Thankfully, they seemed rather willing to interact with their smaller party.
“So everybody now that introductions are done, what is everyone’s opinion on our situation? And how are you all planning on moving forward since we seem to be the only people willing to do anything in the face of this insanity?” Kajin posed the question as he picked his sewing kit back up and started working on a nicer set of clothing for himself. With the level up, he placed points in art to see if he could start adding decorative trims to the clothing.
