Greenleafe touched an important thing about Markavians there. 
And that is that Markavians don't have families in the traditional sense, after a Markavian, at 3 years of age, can take care of itself it is not bound to its group in any way, in fact, most Markavians rather move away and live with other groups. This habit came from the early days of their race when they had to do this to preserve genetic diversity with low numbers, of course instinctively back then. Today its a thing of habit and tradition.
