Oh yeah you are allowed to be outside the "soldier" background. I mentioned earlier that any of the non-combat roles aboard the ship are allowed, so a ship's doctor is a [b]massive yes[/b] for me. Whilst I imagine most people are going to take the people who go on the ground to investigate and do shooty shooty stuff, this is about the crew of a ship, so if you want to provide the on-board crew work as a background/starting point like that and then transition into a more hands on role as it goes on I am all for that
