Flint Mercer stood out at young age. With a father always working abroad, there was no shortage of money, but his mother was the only one able to care for him. Despite this, Flint had trouble with what was socially expected of him. Whispers of autism were made, but never diagnosed. In reality, he was just a psychopath. Not able to feel any emotions, his anchor was his mother. A former IT specialist focused on the concept of AI, she started 'programming' her son with what she believed to be best: Social skills, being able to recognise and even fake emotions to not feel out of place, and most important: Morals. When later his mother died in what the police identified as an accident at first, he took matters into his own hands and shot the one responsible for her death. However, he didn't kill the guy. Flint wounded him with what seemed like a mortal shot, caught in the act of his mother's murderer's next victim, from a distance where he wasn't able to be recognised. Due to the commotion, the criminal had no choice but to surrender himself to the police, only to find out the shot graced his vital organs. From that moment, Flint worked as an IT specialist himself, hiding his true specialism as Gracer, the vigilante-hero of Jump City who rights the illogical fact of criminals getting away from their deserved justice. His nameless alter ego was on duty. Having found a connection between multiple armed robberies that all ended in innocent people getting hurt, he had staked out on an abandoned rooftop with his hunting rifle this rainy evening. Innocent. The word echo'd in his head. No one was truly innocent. Everyone had their fair share of mistakes on their plate. What matters was what they were and how many of them you made. Go past the treshold, and you couldn't go back. His train of thought was halted by a man walking into range. His suspect. It was clear to the bulge beneath his jacket he was hiding a knife. A size between medium and big. Matching the reports made by the other victims. And if those reports were anything the go by, his suspect would strike first before actually going over to robbing. As one victim put it, the 'sick bastard' took pleasure in the attack, before using the stealing of valuables to hide his real reason to assault. Another echo. Although the woman used it as a way to unstress, something he could understand but didn't relate to, he didn't like her wording. Bastard. As if who your parents were should matter. Illogical. And sick. What made one sick? Physically unhealthy for a temporary amount of time? Sure. But being mentally different? Being unable to keep up with socially accepted standards? That isn't sickness, that's being different. Illogical. The suspect moved into an alleyway, around a corner, following a woman. His suspect found a new victim. There was no direct line of sight, but that didn't matter. In the distorted reflection of wet windows, he could see his suspect closing in on her. From the body language, he could see he was about to strike. Suspect just became criminal. With a sigh, he readied his gun, lowered his heartbeat. It would be so easy to just dome the guy. Shoot him in the back of his head, prevent him from taking anymore jabs at people. But how would that make him better? Not like it was a competition, he did this because of his mother. His programmer. His maker. And she programmed him not to kill. She programmed him not to take himself passed that treshold. Didn't mean he couldn't wound to disable. He pulled the trigger. In his eyes, the bullet flew in slow motion. The lightweight bullet hit a few raindrops, went all the way down the busy market street, before hitting the rainpipe he was aiming for at the perfect angle he calculated, before piercing the criminals shoulder. He dropped the knife he had just raised, and the woman turned around, screamed hard and ran just as the man collapsed from the pain. Perfect. Target disabled, attention from his surroundings recieved, and no casualties. He just graced the man's shoulderblade to not give lasting damage, only hitting some muscles and flesh to hurt him. After all, the criminal was a slave to his impulses. Didn't condone his actions, but did make the treshold crossed less high. And it was not for Flint to judge an animal for its instincts. The last echo for the moment. Graced. He saw on the news that his actions were getting noticed. Some fake attention seekers claimed to have seen him at places and times he wasn't. Illogical. However, they started naming him. It seemed the most popular coined name so far was 'Gracer', for he always graced his target's organs. Besides that, because of him catching criminals in the act, he was seen as a 'saving grace' of sorts. Not his intention, but he can understand the confusion. Although he preferred to stay nameless which has its own benefits, it wouldn't be bad to get a handle for certain purposes. Besides, it was only a matter of time before he got notoriety, as even Batman couldn't stay in the dark forever. Only time would know if he would also be forced into the light as well.
