While Athena certainly isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, so to speak, she isn't outright stupid or intellectually challenged. What she lacks in brains however, she more than makes up for with her big heart. Get past the rough outer exterior and cold suspicion, and you'll find a tribal willing to go to any length to protect those she considers precious or close to. Despite many years wandering the harsh and unforgiving wastes, you will find Athena is still a somewhat good person, not above performing some unsavory actions if it will benefit herself or those she is close to, but also determined to only take such shady opportunities if they are the only option left. In battle, Athena prefers to get close to her enemies, smashing away, and more importantly keeping attention away from those less sturdy than herself. Her mother was the sole survivor of a raider ambush while Athena was still in the womb, and by complete accident she stumbled upon the hidden valley the tribe called their home. Too wounded and weary to return to the Wasteland, Athena's mother settled down and would give birth a few months afterwards. Sadly, her mother would not survive this ordeal, dying in the childbirth despite the best efforts of the shamans and the Goddess Diana's attendants. Athena herself was born sickly and was not expected to last long. The chieftess of the tribe could not accept this outcome, and so pleaded with the Goddess for her to aid the child. The Goddess accepted this request, and Athena was taken beneath the earth, into the bowels of Diana's metallic temple. There, the Goddess healed her and bestowed a fitting name upon the newborn. Athena's childhood was simple and blissful, and she still remembers the time fondly. While she was often chastised regarding her lack of interest in the learned arts, it was clear even from this point that the Goddess Diana had another position in mind for her newest disciple. The blessing of the Goddess took shape as incredible bouts of growth in strength and stature, making her tower over the other children of the tribe. As she continued to grow older and older, this growth showed no sign of stopping, and so the elders and chieftess deemed Athena to be a prime warrior candidate, a position that Athena herself greatly looked forward to ascend to when her training was finally complete. Sadly, she never got that chance. While on the cusp of accomplishing the rite of passage into adulthood, the strange conquerors from the south arrived in their valley, championed by a great beast of a man. He spoke with the Goddess, and blinded by rage as Diana rejected him and his men, the monster destroyed the village and the temple of the Goddess. Athena and what few survivors remained had no choice but to flee west, past the Great Colorado River, and into areas known by the locals as "The Mojave". By the time they arrived, their numbers had dwindled to such an extent that there was little hope of ever restoring the tribe. They had lost their connection with the Goddess, and so they were doomed to an aimless existence. Athena bid final goodbyes to those she had painstakingly protected on their journey west, and wandered off into the desert, seeking a new purpose for herself.[/hider]
