The first Dayne is said to have raised Starfall on an island at the mouth of the Torrentine, having tracked a falling star there and found a stone of magical powers. His descendants became Kings of the Torrentine and Lords of Starfall. Along with the Fowlers and Yronwoods, the Daynes were among the most powerful and prestigious houses of ancient Dorne. The Daynes are also famed for Dawn, their ancestral sword made from the fallen star, and the men who wield it, the Swords of the Morning. The Daynes have taken part in many conflicts between Dorne and the Reach, including battles against House Oakheart. King Samwell Dayne, called the Starfire, once burned Oldtown. The last Dayne King, Vorian, known as the Sword of the Evening, was defeated in Nymeria's War and sent to the Wall. Afterwards the Daynes supported Nymeria against King Yorick V Yronwood. Nymeria's third husband was Ser Davos Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. Nymeria, Princess of Dorne, was later succeeded by her eldest daughter by her first husband, Mors Martell, not her son by Davos. In 10 AC during the First Dornish War, Ser Joffrey Dayne led a Dornish army to the walls of Oldtown, razing the fields and villages outside it. Queen Visenya Targaryen retaliated by burning Starfall with Vhagar. [hider=Family Tree] Davos Dayne was a young man when Visenay and Vhagar burned Starfall. While the castle and lands were not lost completely, countless lives were lost for those who were not away at war and for those unable to flee in time. His cousin, Joffrey Dayne, had led the attack on Oldtown, the command was his but it was done at Davos’s father’s instruction. Davos’s father perished in the burning, unwilling to leave the castle. Like many of the survivors, although Davos was spared injury, other scars ran deep. Davos fathered three bastards in the time before he finally married. Both mothers and children were welcomed and recognized in Starfall and remained as such even after marrying Jynessa Blackmont in 22 AC. Childbearing did not come easy to her, and after Clarisse was finally conceived and born, Jynessa lost two more before Davos and her came to an agreement. No matter that the bastards had been born many years before Clarisse, they always knew their place and became, if not siblings, more of uncles and aunt to the little girl who would one day inherit Starfall. Davos’s brother remained close in Starfall as well, their final brother was also slain in battle against the Targaryens, and countless other extended members of the House. Within the past year, Davos’s health has begun to fail. Maesters that have been called in believe it to be a tumor and fear that he will not make it through to another nameday. Clarisse, still so young, has been trained as much as she can to lead her house, the first in two generations who has been untouched by war with the Targaryens and their northern neighbors.
