What’s the last thing you remember then?” Darius was quite perplexed upon learning that Dante had not remembered the events of the battle against the roc. Darius had been slightly worried before but now he was wondering if Dante was suffering from something below the surface. Dante tried to recall the encounter but the last thing he remembered was the roc flapping a powerful gust of wind toward the group. He had guessed the massive creature’s attack had been the cause of the lapse in his memory. However, this was far from the truth. “The gust of wind, I think… I figured something having to do with that knocked me out.” Dante shrugged simply but Darius’ raised eyebrow caused him to doubt his recollection of things. Darius shook his head as the two continued through the dim-lit village. To the two men, the fact that no one had no one had yet railroaded their path, meant they were moving stealthily enough despite their conversation that lacked any noise discipline. “Not even close. That was easy to handle…” Darius glanced down at Dante’s leg where his pants were slightly torn. “Easy for me, I mean. You got tagged but it wasn’t anything to worry about. Anyway, the bird went after Phia but Menzai jumped in at the last minute to save her…” Darius winced as he remembered initially seeing Menzai missing his arm. Even now, it was a sight that would be difficult for him to face. Such an injury meant so many things to Darius. The morbidity of the world he and his brother were now a part of, a sacrifice he wished wasn’t necessary to save a life, how truly unprepared he was to face even just the natural threats of Avalia, and more importantly, his inability to prevent Menzai’s dismemberment. Menzai’s missing arm caused these feelings to surface, so Darius decided he would continue to avert his gaze upon their guardian wolf. And though Dante, didn’t remember anything, Darius was sure his brother was confronted with his own demons at that moment. As Darius continued, things began to piece together in his head. During their two weeks of being here, it was mentioned that they would both have to maintain control of their emotions since their magic was strongly tied to them, even more so than the typical Avalian. “And then?” Dante pressed as Darius left a few seconds of dead air between them. “He lost his arm and then you… snapped. You lost it and I don’t know what you did exactly but the roc was done for. Your earth magic pretty much did the thing in but you wouldn’t stop. I pulled the cord.” Darius made a hand gesture of putting his index fingers together, side-by-side before pulling them away from each other to illustrate him going outside of the radius that allowed them to tap into their magical abilities. There was a brief moment of silence as Dante had a feeling of what may have happened but wasn’t willing to share. Meanwhile, Darius found that he didn’t like retelling the incident and wished he hadn’t been the one to inform Dante. “Oh…” Was all Dante could muster. “Yeah… Um, I think we’re close to where our reward is being kept. It’s some good stuff, we’re gonna need more for whatever comes next.” “We have to get stronger.” “We will. That’s gonna happen again.” The two looked at each other and gave a firm nod in unison, silently affirming this covenant between them.
