Katie - Underground - playing with Daddy Katie stuck her tongue out at the man as they passed him. He was in trouble now. She skipped happily to her room, her daddy in tow. She didn't let go of his hand until they were in her room, just in case he changed his mind and left. She sat cross-legged on the floor and held out a few pieces of crayon to him. "I'll color for you Daddy," she announced and started a picture of a man and a little girl standing in the sunshine in a field of flowers. It was crude, she was only seven after all, but you could tell what it was. Before everyone got sick they used to go to the park and play. Then afterward daddy would get Katie and her brother ice cream while mommy fussed at daddy for giving her too much sugar. But it was no mean fussing, cuz mommy always laughed while she did it. Katie really missed that park. She missed how things used to be. Her mommy and her big brother had gone away. If daddy went away too, she'd be all alone. Finishing her picture, she got up with the picture in her hand and climbed into her daddy's lap, wanting to cuddle. "Daddy?" she asked, her voice soft and fearful. "You're not going to go away too... right? I don't want you to go away." She laid her little head against his chest, listening to him breathe. She had nightmares sometimes, about the sick people. She hated the sickness. It made so many people go away. She wanted daddy to make everyone better, but he couldn't. And that made her sad sometimes. After a little while she looked up curiously. "Daddy? What does 'fuck' mean? I heard Barney say that he couldn't wait to fuck the new girl. Does that mean play? Is there a new girl for me to play with? Is she my age?"
