Yeah, all you would really have to do to make sure he's still the same person is give him a big ego, make him slightly paranoid, narcissistic, arrogant and a perfectionist and those are most of the major aspects of his personality. I mean the whole reason he went all evil genius on the planet was because he was disfigured due to his pride and arrogance, just change his motives a little and you've got the same guy that wants something different. Maybe he still wants to be better than everyone else but he wants to do it through benevolence rather than world domination.
