[Hider=History]The Hayashi family have long been lumberjacks, though with the humble family they lack the means to employ a professional security force to guard their mill against attacks by the creatures of Grimm that inhabit the forest they work. Unfortunately, being on the outskirts of the city and depending on a livelihood that puts them in such danger, they have little choice but to face the threat. Thus, every child in the family knows both about their trade and fighting as a means to survival, taking turns to chop wood and guard the mill.

Daiki, being the oldest of his siblings, was tasked with the burden of taking care of them while his parents worked and harvested what they could from the forest, and when he was old enough to fight, to fend off the creatures of Grimm that came close to their home, assisting his uncle in the task. He was trained rigorously in the process to wield a shinken and to finish the monsters off in a single strike or draw of his blade - he didn't have time to follow-up if he was outnumbered and defending someone else. He was taught the basics of Aura, using it to shield himself and strike at the enemy, but has yet to unlock his semblance, but his skill with his katana is impressive nonetheless, his blade a blur even without his Aura to actively assist him. He came to beacon on the recommendation of a wounded Huntsman who he came across in the forest while he was guarding the mill.

The feat that won him such recognition was the fact that he managed to cut down two Beowolves with a single draw, with a normal katana and no Semblance to help him. Despite his harsh and intimidating look, he moves with a grace that stunned the Hunter, and managed to drag the wounded man back to his family's cabin while evading the wolves. His familiarity with the lay of the land helped, but when the Hunter was healed, he asked Daiki if he wanted to be a Hunter. The thought tugged at him for days until he finally agreed, both wanting to protect his family and build a better life that didn't include risking their lives against the forest daily.[/hider]

Daiki is a quiet and reserved person, dutiful to his family and friends. He considers himself the watchful protector for those he cares about and is quick to lash out at anyone who picks on them. He speaks simply and frankly, partly due to his lack of academic education and partly because he believes in treating people with honour and brutal honesty, even if they don't want to hear it.

He is focused and level-headed, as well as observant. He notices the smallest things about people and considers himself a good judge of character. Once he dedicates himself to something, he doesn't stop until he has mastered it.

Perhaps the most telling trait about him is the fact that he rarely raises his voice, even when angry. He is more likely to issue a quiet warning before following through on it. He remains somewhat bitter and envious of other children his age who grew up in relative safety within the cities and didn't have to bear the responsibilities he did, but he would never trade his childhood for a different one either - hardship had been a much better teacher to him than games and fun.

He is wary of faunus, only because his family has been harassed by thieves passing through before, and on occasion even White Fang raids to disrupt their business simply because they were humans. Only his father's lessons to never sink to his enemy's levels kept him from going after the thugs, though he considers self-defense fair play. The occasional wounded or starving faunus that expressed gratitude for their compassion and hospitality also helped mellow out his anger at the race, though those were the minority.[/hider]

Daiki was perched on a boulder and keeping watching over his sister Hinata as she worked on an oak tree. "The way you're hacking at it will topple it away from the river." He pointed out with a sigh, wondering just how many times he had pointed out that mistake to his sister already. She cursed at him and brushed him off, telling him to keep an eye out for the Grimm rather than her technique (or lack thereof).

That was when he heard it. A gunshot. It hadn't come from the direction of the cabin, and his parents were working on the opposite side of the river, so there was no reason why a gunshot should sound from the east. "Hinata, get back to the cabin. [i]Now.[/i]" He instructed forcefully as he took off, his sister's protests falling on deaf ears as he rushed towards the sound of the fighting. The howls of the Beowolves could be heard as they seemed to converging on their prey. It wasn't the first time some unwary traveler stumbled upon a pack and alerted the whole forest, but this was the first time the crashing of trees could be heard. The battle was a messy one.

It took him ten minutes to arrive at the scene, where a man was swing an axe haphazardly and swatting away the creatures that came at him. The other arm was carrying the shield, but it hung limply at his side. Daiki was about to yell out a warning as the Hunter's heel backed into a root and tripped the man backwards, opening him to an simultaneous pounce by two Beowolves.

There was no time to react. Daiki leapt instinctively, his right hand on his shinken's handle and his left on the scabbard. His training with his uncle kicked in as he visualised a single arc for his sword to follow, cutting straight through the two beasts. All that was left was to execute it. Time stood still for a moment as he was right in front of the two creatures of Grimm, at the perfect moment to strike.

He drew his blade and the arc brought it clean it through the first opponent's neck, and the momentum of him arms carried the blade to open a gash on the side of the second wolf. When time resumed it's normal speed again, he was on the ground and had his katana back in hits sheath while he heard the Hunter groan in pain. He turned to see two slain Beowolves at each side of the hunter, his two kills for the day.

Daiki trudged over the man and helped him up, throwing one of the warrior's arms over his shoulders as he supported the Hunter and guided him in the direction of the cabin. "My family works the forest here. We'll tend to your wounds. We have cookies." The young boy offered. The wounded man simply laughed.

"It's just a scratch, but I won't deny help when it's offered." The large burly, redheaded warrior had a gruff voice. "Who taught you how to fight like that anyway?"

"My uncle." Daiki replied simply. "But our family has a saying - 'Our elders' lessons are often the forest's tests.'"

"Well, I could have used some lessons from your elders... but perhaps you could too, from very different teachers. Tell me, have you ever heard of Beacon?"[/hider]
