The Beginning of the End

One moment there was cheering within the stadium for the one on one match. Pyrrha versus Penny. As the match went on, the video displayed something utterly horrifying. The sight of one of the girls using their semblance to tear the other limb from limb, the despair etched in her face as her arms were dismembered, her torso severed from below the bosom. The other girl crumpled into a heap, the clanging of the multiple swords she wielded being the only sound within the silent stadium... and yet the scene lacked any blood.

How could a mere robot bleed?

"This is not a tragedy."

The sounds of a feminine voice pierced the stadium as the feed continued playing, the screen now replaced by an eerie red with a black pawn centered on the monitor. No one dared stop to speak against this voice, their tongues still as before.

"This was not an accident."

"This is what happens when you hand over your trust."

"Your safety."

"Your children."

"To men who claim to be our guardians, but are, in reality nothing more than men."

Those were the words that reverberated across the stadium and across all televisions across Vale. Whether or not you wanted to hear a possibly horrible truth, the commanding voice continued with its baleful observations, chiding Vale and Atlas with destructive information.

"Our Academies' headmasters wield more power than most armies and one was audacious enough to control both. They cling to this power in the name of peace, and yet, what do we have here?"

There was a brief pause only for a moment to let the scene sink in even further.

"One nation's attempt at a synthetic army, mercilessly torn apart by another's star pupil. What need would Atlas have for a soldier disguised as an innocent little girl?"

"I don't think the Grimm can tell the difference."

"And what, I ask you, is Ozpin teaching his students? First a dismemberment, now this? Huntsmen and Huntresses should carry themselves with honor and mercy."

"Yet I have witnessed neither."

"Perhaps Ozpin thought defeating Atlas in the Tournament would help people forget his colossal failure to protect Vale when the Grimm invaded it's streets."

"Or perhaps this was his message to the tyrannical dictator that has occupied an unsuspecting Kingdom with armed forces."

"Honestly? I haven't the slightest clue as to who is right and who is wrong."

"But I know that the existence of peace is fragile. And the leaders of our Kingdoms conduct their business with iron gloves."

"As someone who hails from Mistral, I can assure you the situation there is equally undesirable."

"Our Kingdoms are at the brink of war. Yet we, the citizens, are left in the dark."

So I ask you when the first shots are fired..."

"Who do you think you can trust?"

As the words pierced your skull, the feed came to an abrupt end, leaving the coliseum in complete befuddlement. No further human sound came out as a response to this, not even one from the teachers, Oobleck and Port. The only thing left on the screen was static, left to your own devices, thoughts. What were you to think of this whole announcement? Instantly, warning sirens echoed across the stadium surprising some of the audience as it blared out a response.

"Alert. Incoming Grimm attack."

"Threat level: Nine."

"Please seek shelter in a calm and orderly manner."

The intensity of the crowd skyrocketed as some could handle their senses, flying into pure undulated fear which rippled across the stadium. Screams and shouts echoed as civilians and students alike shoved their way past each other, not knowing how to properly respond to such an imminent threat. Even Ironwood failed to bring the panicked masses to a halt as his voice was barely audible at the tone all around. It was a slew of fright and other negative emotions stirring within before pouring out.

It also didn't help that there was a giant Nevermore attempting to break the force-field that concealed the top of the arena. One could wonder how it broke past Vales defenses, especially with the tight security they had. The shouts of fury and anguish were intertwined with the screeches of many Nevermores soaring across the sky; there was no difference to either noise.

The barriers... it was failing and those shields keeping those citizens and students safe? It shattered like a mirror...

...

The final scene before you all left on one of the ships was the image of a Beowolf terrorizing the landing strip before promptly being put down by Ironwood.

Just what was happening?

The inside of the ship hummed with a soft wirr as some sobbing penetrated the atmosphere. It felt stifling, not in any sense comforting... It was as if the air was going to suffocate everyone within the ship you all boarded. The outside was faring no better as Gryphons and Nevermores ruled the skies, along with an Atlesian Airship destroying its own comrades. It was as if the world had gone mad.

Not one of the students dared to speak up at a time like this. They all stood, staring listlessly at each other as the pilots silently maneuvered the soon to be Hunters and Huntresses away. Even so there were emotions clumping together, volatile, mashing together. But even so...

The safety that was was known...

The happiness of the realm...

The lives people lead... they were all shattered in an instant.

What were you to make of this impending chaos?

Who do you think you can trust?

Daedalus Ivory

It was as if Daedalus had stepped through a gate into another world. The sterile, air-conditioned interior of the Atlesian airship couldn't have been further from the chaos that had erupted in the arena barely minutes before.

The worst part was the silence. The second the hatch doors had closed the screams of terror from the landing pads had ceased, and other than the occasional sob from a student and the low, quiet hum of the engines, not a sound could be heard.

He looked around the crowded cargo bay at the faces of his friends and compatriots, each echoing the same sickening mixture of shock, confusion and sheer primal terror that welled from deep within his core. For the first time in years, Daedalus knew that this wasn't something any amount of his empathy or reassurance could simply put to rest - and that powerlessness terrified him.

The rest of team DVIL sat in stunned silence beside him. To his left, Layla was bolt upright and alert as her drone hovered nearby. Both Huntress and machine were the product of strict Atlesian military discipline, and the pair were constantly and anxiously scanning the craft for any sign of threat. Ignatius on his right was tapping his foot frantically, stress lines creasing his face like cracks in the veneer of his usually outlandish disposition - Daedalus had never seen him this frightened before. And finally, Violetta stood to the right of Ignatius, one foot up and leaning on the wall as she stared impassively into space. Although Daedalus didn't share the distaste that a number of students had for his fellow team-mate, even after a year fighting alongside her he found it hard to read her outside of combat.

The silence was smothering, and the general miasma of fear became too much for Daedalus. He looked between his team-mates - his friends - and quietly spoke to them.

'Hey. You three okay?'

Layla Semara

Everything was happening so quickly. One minute, everyone was enjoying the Vytal festival tournament and then next, all hell had broken loose. Grimm attacking Beacon, a mysterious woman stirring the chaos with her monologue. But what really bothered Layla, was Penny's existence. In the back of her mind, she knew about Penny. It's just that nothing added up at the time, nor did she investigate it. During her time at Beacon, her parents often sent her cheesy photos of their research back in Atlas. One of them went something like "We're working on a super secret project! I bet you wish you were here!", with a picture of her parents grinning in their lab coats.

Of course, being Atlas citizens, Layla had become acquainted with Penny to some degree during the festival. She knew something was odd about Penny. The way she spoke. The way she'd hiccup whenever she lied. The way her hands felt unnaturally... solid. 'A marvel of Atlas engineering', as her parents would say. She wondered how they were feeling now, since Penny was torn to pieces. Layla couldn't help but feel angry at the person on the speakers. It was as if she was blaming Layla's parents for all of this. They hadn't done anything wrong..

Not every Hunter and Huntress in Atlas were soldiers. Or at least, that's what she wanted to believe.

The ship's atmosphere was suffocating. Physically and mentally. Everyone on the ship, save for Vi, was visibly shaken by the events. She was more worried about Ig and Dalus, since she knew that they had been affiliated with the White Fang before... 'It must be nice to have such an indifferent outlook on everything.', she thought to herself as she glanced at Vi. Layla never understood the other girl. At first, she tried to be close friends with her, because 'girls gotta stick together', but she was just.. really really.. odd. Good teammate though.

Her gaze moved over to Dalus as he spoke,
'Hey. You three okay?'

"I'm.. alright." She responded in an equally hushed tone, but it was easy to hear the hesitation in her voice.

"I'm fine." was Vi's curt response, eye sliding over her team, guauging their current state of mind in comparison to her own. Why they were all so shell-shocked, she could partially understand, given a lot had happened from the robot girl getting torn to shreds to a huge number of Grimm pouring into the city. Without a doubt, a lot of people were going to die, no matter what they did, and this was truly a situation straight out of hell. But wasn't that what they were trained to do? They were soldiers, and they did what was asked of them in order to protect those who couldn't protect themselves. It was what being a hunter meant, and even if she was forced to be one, she was always prepared for things to go south at any moment.

As Layla gave a rather tentative response, sensing the weakness and wondering whether she should try and cheer her up. That was what teammates did, right? Then again, she wasn't really the type to do that, so that would likely back fire immensely, probably causing the other girl to get either extremely annoyed or upset with her. While normally that wouldn't bother her much, now was a bad time to mess with the team dynamics, so she decided that the best thing she could do was not say anything more and simply continue to observe. Turning to Daedalus, she wondered whether he and Ignatius would be able to cut down their former comrades of the White Fang if they got in their way. Vi knew that she'd have more than no problem turning the heads of those damn extremists into scattered bits of viscera with Black needle if they got in her way. They may have been something good way back when, but for as long as Vi had known of them, they were just terrorists with a good excuse and a hit out on her family.

Speaking of Ignatius, he was the most rattle out of the four of them, his usually annoying attitude and smile having disappeared in the face of current events. Under different circumstances, she might've mocked him about it, but once again, this wasn't the time to disrupt team dynamics. They all needed to be ready to take on whatever was out there. Letting out a low sigh, Vi wondered what her family was likely doing down on the ground. Her Mom was probably turning Grimm and White Fang into shishkebabs right now with a crazy smile on her face while Crimson played rear-guard, making sure she didn't get her self flanked while she tore through her opponents. She wasn't worried about them, they were with each other and had each others back. Her brother was a bit of a goof and could be easily distracted at times, but that was no reason to think he might get blindsided by an Ursa while passing by a nearby ally, another Grim m taking advantage of the opening to charge at her mother's back, claws descending down upon he-
Stop that. No point in worrying about them right now. It'll make you sloppy. It'll make you miss. And then you'll be the one in trouble, so you need to focus Vi. They're fine . . . they've got to be.

Everything has gone to shit. First, that Blonde girl breaking that guy's leg now the end of Vale as they knew it after the star student from Mistral shredding an android girl into ribbons right in front of everybody to see. That put people on edge, him especially, but the worst possible thing had to arrive with the Grimm. The White Fang. He was not prepared to deal with them, not now or ever. But it would seem like fate have something in store for him. And now he has to cut down the very people that saved him from a life of slavery. It left a bad taste in his mouth.

The silence made it all the worse. With only the humming of the engine and the propellers and the odd noise that the passengers made, it all seemed so surreal. Like this was all a terrible nightmare, but it wasn't, it was all real. And soon Ignatius would have his hands covered in the blood of people he once called his saviors. He knew one day they would do something this drastic, but he still wasn't ready for it. He never would've been.

Suddenly the voices of his teammates rang out in the deafen silence. Daedalus' sincere worry. The hesitation in Layla's voice. And the indifference in Vi's voice. It helps ground in reality. Even just a little. Ignatius liked his team well enough; Daedalus was a darling and a better person than himself, Ig was surprised that they ended up as allies, but he wouldn't have it any other way. Layla was a good man as well, surprising since she came from Atlas, but she was a Faunus, so it was easy for them to talk and be friends although her technobabble was hard to follow sometimes, But she made it up being a powerful fighter, and he was glad to on her team. Vi. Vi is Vi. She is a hard person to figure out, when they first met he thought he figured her out, Ignatius thought she was nothing more than her ancestors, but Vi wasn't, Vi was her own person, a terrible person, but she's her own person nevertheless. But damn, she's useful in a fight even with her flawed personality.

Ignatius let out a deep sigh; he has to be there for his teammates he cannot let them carry him. So then he let out one of his charming smiles, although it was clearly fake. "You needn't worry, love, I'm all right." He wasn't.

Lariah Marine

What could you honestly say when you'd watched a girl get torn to pieces, watched the light leave her eyes and watched her movements cease?

Lariah had... never really encountered death before. It wasn't a common topic in her household, nor was it something she would bring up regularly. And to see it, live, right in front of her unblinking eyes... it was something that chilled her to her core. On top of the announcement by that mysterious woman and the attack of the Grimm upon Vale, it formed a nauseating cocktail of emotions that swirled around inside of her, unsettling her and making her stomach churn. It was like feeling the ocean in a storm inside of her... she couldn't help but place a hand on her stomach for how it felt.

The silence in the ship above Vale was broken by some of her fellow students, checking up on each other. Even in these dark times, they were at least finding ways to speak up and continue to hold on to hope. Lariah remembered that... in times like this, now was not the time to be feeling sorry for themselves. Getting over the idea of death going on right in front of her was it's own matter... but right now, they had to remember their training and remember who they were.

Hunters. In training, but still hunters. They had to act like hunters. She took a deep breath and let it out, gripping her knees slightly as she steadied herself.

"Guys?" Lariah looked toward her team, to Basil, to Jaden and to Scarlett. Scarlett especially... something in Lariah's heart told her she would be feeling the worst of this. "We've got to be strong. We need to remember who we are. We're hunters, and no terrible situation like this can get the best of us, right?"

Ok so it might not have been her best rally ever, but she was trying...

Basil stared out the window , watching the Nevermores and Gryphons terrorise the skies and occasionally swoop down to pick off anybody unlucky enough to be caught by the Grimm; The White Fang were arriving in ships, releasing even more Grimm into the area. This was madness. Madness I should have anticipated, the governments and militaries of this world were too slow , and this is their reward. Perhaps the fall of Vale will be enough to wake the other kingdoms up...Perhaps not. The events that had just unfolded were unfortunate, but where they really surprising? Atlas had had an interest in robotics for years now and had constantly been improving their new toys for years. Was it really so shocking to think they had began to manufacture robots that could simulate an aura?

That women must have been involved in the attack somehow, but she had a point. Why had Ironwood brought his armies to Vale? Had he planned to take Vale for Atlas? Or did he know something was going to happen? Frankly,Basil didn't know or care; but he did know one thing. The world's leaders had made a cataclysmic mistake, and the hunters were expected to fix it for them..

Basil's scattered thoughts were interrupted by a few of the huntsman in training beginning to speak up after the events that had just took place; most remained in silence however. One of the hunters that had began to speak was Lariah "We've got to be strong. We need to remember who we are. We're hunters, and no terrible situation like this can get the best of us, right?". Basil agreed with this notion, they needed to be strong or they would crumble with the rest of Vale. Basil turned from the window before speaking "I agree with Lariah, sitting here and crying isn't helping anyone. Ironwood and Ozpin have made a mess of this situation, it's our job to clean it up. So get yourselves together, we have a job to do" the faunus spoke in a blunt tone. There was no time for niceness or formalities' right now.

Daedalus Ivory

It was a stupid question, Daedalus supposed. How could anyone really be okay with what had just happened? Grimm overrunning the city, rumors of the White Fang roaming the streets (although Daedalus desperately wanted to believe otherwise), and that girl in the arena... Normally a robot being torn to shreds wouldn't have phased him in the slightest, but Penny was so real...

He shook his head as if to dislodge the thought. There would be plenty of time for reflection later, but right now his team desperately needed him to stay composed and lead them through this. After all, his composure was why Ozpin had picked him for the position, right?

Gently he placed a giant hand on both Layla's and Ignatius' shoulders, a silent sign of support and solidarity as if to say you are not alone. Vi remained perfectly calm and passive, as usual. In less recent times of stress or difficulty she'd try to pep the team up - she wasn't very good at it, but the fact she even bothered at all meant that beneath that cold and aloof exterior was a heart of gold, even if others couldn't see it.

'We'll get through this. We always do.' The words felt forced, like some weak attempt at finding a silver lining amidst a typhoon. But if they managed to put even one of his friends at ease, it was worthwhile. 'But for now we have a job to do. The second we land, we need to make contact with any medical teams on the ground. Vi, I want you to find high ground and keep a lookout for us. Layla, if that machine of yours can check people's vitals, then I need you to help me out with triage. Ignatius, I want you ready to buy us some time if Vi spots anything coming our way.'

Daedalus trailed off on this last note, a growing sense of doubt gnawing at him. There was one crucial flaw with his plan: In the panic back at the stadium, he'd neglected to ask the pilot where exactly they were being taken.

Team FTLC/Flintlock

Felicia Iron

"Out of the things to go wrong today - I didn't not expect to see, somebody got torn to limb from limb and a Grimm attack on the same day," spoke Felicia - the current resident only goatlike faunus in a team of three other humans. What more ironic, she was the only female of the team and likely the strongest one too. She knew her black humor, but this was almost ridiculous.

The team they were currently part of, consisted of somebody who looked like a re-enactor, somebody whom looked like they worked in as a waitress and one, whom fit the student-look, except he had red hair. She didn't get much information on why they got grouped together, only somebody writting it out and sticking it on a wall. Maybe it was the whole 'stronger as a group' team. So far, all of them liked to get head-first into the action.

She was wondering, how they could build a team that way - she had believed they would compensate on the eachother weaknesses. But after everything - she was certain, things would get hairy and crazy fast. The three of them, had mostly stuck together - once the chaos began. Only because they were originally seated together of being a team - and when the chaos started, it was mostly strength in numbers.

"Anybody expecting a Nevermore to come and eat us soon?" she asked, being dry and black as ever in her humor. She expected on faunus joke to come soon, her way - as she leaned against her hammer Titan.

Thomas was reloading his gun, sliding pulling out shells from his pack and slowly sliding each one into a chamber, cycling through them all. He looked around every so often, always ready for something. This mess at Beacon is what he prepared for, but he wasn't sure if the same was true of his team. They were good in a fight, sure, but they were also good outside of a fight. Either they found easier to transition between battle and everyday life, or they treated both with a carefree sincerity. Whatever they did, Thomas respected them for it even though he didn't want to emulate them. Especially Lloyd, Thomas hated Lloyd's upper-class snobbery and comfortable lifestyle.

He answered Felicia. "I don't expect, I prepare. That Nevermore will come regardless of what you expect." He took a moment to look down the sights of his gun, pointing at the bulkhead, away from anyone. The sights were still calibrated correctly. Thomas talked again, feeling vindicated by recent events.

"Well, I think people got a glimpse of reality today. Not the horseshit that commanders like Ironwood are spoutin'. He sure doesn’t give a damn about the blood and guts the grunts are spilling, maybe he was playing dressup with his little toy instead of looking at the casualty reports. People like that are the same sorts who give us grief for how Beacon's fighting, but they don't know how it is in the real world. Killing Grimm is what matters, and they ain’t got honor or mercy or nothing but jaws hungry for your blood. I don’t give a damn about all that agenda that lady on the speakers is pushing, but at least she’s got the balls to tell you something without sugarcoating it." Thomas was talking without caring if anyone listened. It was just his way of expressing himself.

Lloyd Gold

Lloyd was crossing his arms and frowning at nobody in particular as he recalled meeting Penny. He had gone out of his way to greet her after viewing her team's performance in the 1st round, when he shook her hand he had felt his Semblance acting up. He had originally thought it was just reacting to strong electricity in her weapon, but it looks like he was reacting to her in the end.

Lloyd laughed to himself slightly out of shock. "What the hell... I should've done something. Should've said something. Fuck..." He muttered as he looked over at the team leader Felicia. She said something about Nevermore trying to eat them and a smile stretched over his features. "It could try. Though it might find my taste to be a little... shocking." Lloyd laughed at his own terrible pun and pulled out his scroll to write it down for future use.

Thomas began talking about real hunter life and Lloyd shook his head. "Oh come on, there's no need to be so Grimm. There's a time and place for ruthless behavior, during a tournament when you're fighting other Hunters and Huntresses isn't that time though." As he finished his statement he took a pack of gum out of his pocket and popped a strip in his mouth.

"Anyone want one? Cherry flavored." He held out the pack of gum for anyone else to take if they chose.

"Understood." was all that Vi said in response to Daedalus, her gaze still fixated somewhere in space, but this attention would soon shift toward Ignatius. Clearly, he was shaken by the whole ordeal of what they'd likely be facing, and that irritated her to some degree. She knew the situation was crappy, but Ig seemed to be seconds from falling apart. As such, she decided that she needed to redirect his attention to something other than what was going on. So, drawing on her irritation, she began to speak to the Moth Faunus with as much mockery as she could fit into her voice.

"Ig, please stop BS'ing us with your fake charm. If you're ready to roll over just because shit has hit the fan, then please do us all a favor and jump out of the aircraft right now. Saves us the trouble of having to plan around you if you suddenly decide to choke." Her eyes stared directly at him with a cold apathy, as if she didn't care at all for his existence. She was kidding, if he couldn't get it together, than it would be better for him to kill himself, rather than get them all killed trying to save his ass. She couldn't care less of he hated her or if she hurt his feelings, if it got him to pull his weight, than that was fine by her.

But that means you do care. Some distant, treacherous part of her psyche whispered into her mind. You care at least a little, right?

Fuck off, that's one voice too many in my head, thank you very much. I'm not interested in becoming like my mother.

No response was given, but she still felt that treacherous presence inside her head, the side of her that wanted to be honest with their feelings. But she couldn't be honest with her feelings because she didn't have any real feelings to be honest with. She didn't care about anything or anyone, no matter what others thought.

Carnel Novell

Carnel had been more surprised that Penny was a robot than the fact that she got shredded to pieces. And after the chaos erupted, he had his weapons deployed and ready as they had made it to the evac ships. Carnel was currently studying a new set of scratches on his gauntlet, courtesy of an Ursa that had tried to attack Carnel and his team. Fortunately, it was defeated very quickly.

As he slowly traced one of the scratches with a finger, he was sitting back and listening as the rest of his team spoke their minds and made puns and jokes. Carnel liked that, and smiled slightly. Still, the recent events had dampened his spirits a little. He was meant to be a Hunter, training to fight the Grimm, and there everyone was, simply running away. While Carnel did not disagree with evacuating, he was disappointed that he could not do more to help defend Beacon. Nonetheless, it was something to endure, to live another day and maybe even one day take back the land the Grimm invaded. Maybe even figure out who that woman on the screen was, and what part she played in all this.

Looking up from his gauntlet, Carnel saw that Lloyd was offering bubble gum, but Carnel raised a hand in rejection and shook his head politely. He never did like chewing gum, anyway. Carnel then sighed and said, "Well, things could be worse. At least we're all alive." Carnel paused for a second, then asked, "So, what's our plan now? Anything you guys got in mind?"

Layla Semara

"That would be one of it's primary functions." Layla replied with a nod, her voice sounding a little more normal than before. She always felt more comfortable and confident when Dalus gave out his plans. It wasn't often that Layla got to use her drone for anything other than scanning for Grimm, but she was glad that she added such functions like life detection. Her gaze turned to Vi and Ig, only to see Vi reprimanding Ig for being in his emotional state. The snake girl wasn't about to let Vi's social ineptitude make the situation worst.

She got up from her seat and stepped toward Vi, putting a single finger on the girl's lips. "If you have nothing helpful to say, don't say it, Vi. How many times do I have to tell you?" She hissed, her eyes glaring intensely at the other girl. Even if Vi was trying to get Ig back on his feet by telling him to shape up, she really has a terrible way of doing it. Layla was getting pretty sick of having to act like a mother for Vi in these social situations. However, she did see the value in Vi's words.

"But she has point, Ig." She began, her gaze moving to the moth faunus. "We need to work as a team to help everyone that we can. Those who can't defend themselves come first, our feelings come later. For now, we need to ready ourselves for what's ahead.", her voice carrying a very serious tone.

'I can't afford to fail.. No. We can't afford to fail.' She thought, her fears were beginning to swirl in her mind, but she didn't let that show in the slightest.
