[IC] Working Hard & Hardly Working (Office Comedy RP)

9:00 am
Lin shuffles through the resumes on her desk with excited expressions painted on her face. Her assistant Eliza stands with a notepad ready for her boss to make her choices of candidates.
With a look of contempt Lin proudly stands up, “All right let’s hire all of them!” she puts the pile of resumes into Eliza’s hands who stands shocked.
“B-but Ms. Wilde! What about interviews, are all of them are competent enough to hire?” Eliza spits out as she skims through all the applications.
Lin stands at the window looking out to the city beneath her. She had bought the biggest building in town for her company. Yes, a whole 10 floors! How luxurious it felt when Lin shook hands with the trusty realtor to seal the deal. It was a feeling more exhilarating than when she finally beat Betty White during her fight club session.
Lin spins around with fire in her eyes causing Eliza to freeze. It was a look Eliza loved, when Ms. Wilde was happy, she was. Her heart was racing, waiting for her boss to declare the passion behind her emotions.
“They’re actually the most incompetent people for this company which is why they’re perfect! So, make the calls, I want them to start working this Monday!” Lin puts a hand on Eliza’s shoulder who still stood dumbfounded.
“This Monday? But it IS Monday!” Eliza stammered while finding it hard to look Ms. Wilde in the eyes.

“Exactly, if they aren’t here by 10:00 am fire them!” Lin pats her shoulder and skips out the door to the elevator. “I’m counting on you Eliza! I’m going to grab me some drinks to celebrate so make those calls!” With a flash Lin Wilde was gone leaving Eliza alone in the office struck with shock.

Calls are made and everyone finds out that they have been hired! The woman on the other end doesn’t sound too enthusiastic but who cares at this point? Finally, a stable income (though no one mentioned exactly how much you’ll be making) and a reason to live! But before you hang up to go tell your parents/friends/pets that you’re not a deadbeat, the voice on the other end interrupts your victory-
“You start today, come in by 10am or else you’re fired!” With that a click ends the call.
First day on the job and there’s already a lot of pressure! Will you freeze for 55 minutes or run like your life depends on it?
But look at the clock it’s already 9:10!

Richard Hyde had had woken up looking over towards his wife kissing her on the cheek while she was still sleeping. Getting up form his bed heading to the bathroom brushing his teeth with a toothpaste that is all natural and using mouthwash that had about too much alcohol content. Using some Dolce and Gabana spray he did not like the smell but was forced to use it since his daughter bought it for him. Getting out of the bathroom getting dressed putting on a red dress shirt and dark blue suit and slacks. Heading over towards his drawer getting his favorite tie being a black tie filled with Looney Tune characters.

After taking about 20 or so minutes of getting dressed heading downstairs and eating a quick breakfast of bagel with butter with a orange and grapefruit juice.Now heading outside of the house with his briefcase and coffee container filled with espresso heading towards his car. Getting inside his 2008 Honda Civic and driving away form his house and towards his job.

Robin stared at his iPhone still in mild shock. He was stood in his tiny kitchen wearing only a tight pair of boxers and a bit of stubble on his chin. He subconsciously scratched his crotch as he continued to stare at the time. “Well damn, someone actually hired me... fuc-” He dropped his phone onto an oven-glove as he dashed around to make himself presentable.

One shave, shower and poop later, he emerged from his bathroom as a dashing young man in a black suit, white shirt and red tie (That wasn't tied very well and didn't hug his collar but rather hung loosely). He filled up a flask of delicious black coffee and picked up his keys, wallet and phone. He glanced at the time.

“SHIIIIIIIII-” He squealed as he rushed out of his apartment and headed to work. He was probably going to get there at 9:59, but maybe he'll get lucky.

After getting the call from the company, Alison sleepily walked into the bathroom and washed her face. Shee then proceeded to wash her teeth rather quickly, since, now she only had 45 minutes to get to her job. She grabbed a white shirt dress along with a red tie, black tights and red flats. With no delay, she put her attire on and tied her hair into a high ponytail with a red ribbon. Deciding to skip make-up, she grabbed an apple as well as a red bag and raced to her not-so-old pickup truck.

After a thirty minute drive, she arrived at precisely 9:57. Walking up to the lobby, she took out some candy and munched on it.

Dennis could barely contain his grin as the call ended, his hands trembling from a mix of surprise and excitement. He had done it. He had actually managed to get a job. Suddenly, all those years of pouring over code seemed all the more worth it at the prospect of working for some big (albeit enigmatic) company. Granted, he had no actual clue of what his job would entail, but work was work and he wasn't one to complain.

"Good news, Lafayette!" he crooned to one of his cats passing by. Dennis scooped up the cat, tickling the squirming feline under its chin. "I just got a new job. Isn't this great? All I have to do is show up...at...oh no." Dennis' voice trailed off as he caught sight of the clock hanging just above his TV, it's long hands stretching towards 9:13. Tens of minutes away from his deadline. "Oh no no no no no!"

Dennis dropped the disgruntled Lafayette one his couch, dashing towards his room. Fifty or so minutes to get ready and get going. He could do this. He stumbled around his room as he hurried to pull on a crisp suit and trousers, nearly falling on his face several times. In a few moments, with his curly brown hair in disarray and his glasses perched crookedly on his nose, Dennis was making his way past the stares of his three disinterested cats and to the door of his apartment. "See you, Lafayette! Later, Montague! You're in charge, Ishmael." He fumbled for his car keys, for once thankful of the running he had been forced to do in his childhood as he sprinted down the hall and towards the parking lot. Practically leaping into his car, Dennis screeched out of the parking lot. Soon, Dennis pulled once front of the building and took a deep breath. Today was a new day, with a new job just ahead. He could do this. Probably. Adjusting his tie, Dennis slipped out of the car and walked into the office.

Ruby

Ruby was up at the crack of dawn. Ruby was always up at the crack of dawn. It was one of them farm kid thing, she figured. One that wasn't going away soon, at least. So when the shrill piercing ringtone of her scratch-covered phone did none to startle her. Looking at the phone she saw ber friend, Jen's name brightened up the screen. She swiped up the phone and answered the call with a muffle "Y'ello," her mouth full of her last bite of jam on toast, only to find it wasn't Jen but another woman on the phone. Crap. The other day she'd taken Michael's phone and switches all the names of his contacts, Ruby had totally forgotten he'd done the same. Doing her best not to swear into the phone Ruby 'cleared her throat' before given the politer greeting of "Hello, Ruby speaking,"

After profusely thanking they woman on the other side of the line Ruby rushed to get changed into a simple white dress shirt and a knee-length black skirt. From then she runs into her car taking the shortest route possible. 2 blocks from the building she's caught up in a traffic jam, "Seriously! " she screams, honking her horn. Her hazel eyes flitter to the little digital clock on her car, 9:56. In framctic thinking she drives her car to the side of the road and pulls out her large handbag. Locking the door behind her she proceed to run to the building.

As she enters the doors she watches the clock tick to 9:59. " I'm here. I'm here," she calls out, panting

Jonah woke up to the phone call, he had passed out in front of a building after being unable to get back home from a wedding. The call didn’t surprise him nor did the time he had to get there by, as most gangsters on the top of the food chain are pretty strict. But at this point, he began to panic. He was far away from his jail cell, hungry, with no change of clothes, and he didn’t know how to find the building.
He was wearing dress shoes, black slacks with a white shirt and tie which was oddly tidy despite him sleeping outside. It was clearly not the right attire for a mob gathering, but he had not time to retrieve a change of clothes from home. He wished that he had worn his ripped jeans and shirt with this wicked skull design to the wedding.
He decided he would wear what he had on, and then he had to figure out what to do for food. As soon as he thought of it he remembered the cake he was going to bring home from the wedding. He removed it from its plastic bag and then ate it carefully, making sure not to get any crumbs on himself. As he was eating, he saw a sign across the street, apparently he had fallen asleep right next to his work. He crossed the street as soon as he finished the cake.
He arrived thirty minutes early with a respectable look about him. For the first and probably last time in his career.

The clock strikes 10 and luckily everyone made it just in time. Some just a few seconds too close, and Eliza had hoped that none of them would have come. Like Ms. Wilde said, these people were in her eyes, the most incompetent for this company so why hire them?
"Welcome, I see that you all are somewhat capable of following simple orders." Eliza started in a cold tone. She stared at the ipad in her hand to confirm everyone's presence and pulls up a task Ms. Wilde set up before hand.
"Says here your first task is to get to know each other? _{that's stupid} " She muttered the last line under her breath.
Eliza rolls her eyes and proceeds, "I guess go around the room and introduce yourselves to each other, say why you wanted to work here, sing kumbaya, or something along those lines." She then walks into an elevator and disappears to the 10th floor. Meanwhile a tv screen in the front lobby turns on with a timer set for 10 minutes. Underneath the timer was a message:
DAY 1: Get to the top floor with time limit using the staircase only while introducing yourselves to each other! Cameras are in use to determine who completes the task!
The timer then starts to count down and a door on the side opens up revealing sets of staircases leading up while a loud locking sound is heard from the elevator doors.

Richard had arrived at the office and sitting down at one of the many chairs that was set up inside of the room, Hearing the young woman speaking to them looking disinterested in whom they were which annoyed the older man. Hearing her ice breaker task thinking it was quite strange but never the less it could be fun. Slowly standing up form his seat looking over towards the other co-workers. "Is anyone coming?" He asked them smiling.

Dennis' shoulders drooped just a fraction as the rather stiff woman left them with their assigned task. It was...odd, to say the least, and the back of his mind itched with the suspicion that this probably broke some fire hazard violations. But all those thoughts faded as he took a long look at the TV and its slow, blinking timer. Dennis look around at his new co-workers and laughed nervously. "We should probably...er..." He waved a hand towards the revealed set of stairs. Clearing the nervous quiver in his voice, Dennis strode on ahead with his nervous half-smile plastered to his face.

"Dennis Morrison. That's, um, my name. Since we're introducing ourselves. I can't sing kumbaya, or sing at all," his voice wobbled with nervous laughter akin to that of a first-year math teacher making a corny joke in front of a class of eighth-graders, "but I can say that I thought this job was a good opportunity for me. Plus, I'm broke and this is kinda my first job." His ramblings trailed off as he climbed the steps two at a time.

Robin was certain that Eliza couldn't take her eyes off of him; who could blame her? Robin subconsciously ran his fingers through his hair and had a smug smirk sat on his lips. He gave the others a toothy grin and went to slap Richard on the back. “Yeah, I'm coming. Got to make sure you don't get a heart-attack on the way up there, old timer!” Was that a distasteful joke? He thought. Worried about his first impression on the older man, he took a few skips towards Dennis and the stairs.

“I'm Robin Miller, my father owns a restaurant; Lord of the Wings, you've probably heard of it.” He glanced at the others, ready for them to be mind-blowing-ly impressed. “This isn't my first job, but I'm excited for the new challenges and opportunities this place will give. Lookin' forward to getting to know my new co-workers as well.” As he spoke he tried to get ahead of Dennis on the stairs, as though it was a show of dominance.

Seriously? She'd just run and now she has to run again? Ruby groaned, looking up at the clock. The seconds ticked. She was sure this was meant to be an office job! Ruby wasn't much or a sports person. Definitely not a runner. And she was in a skirt for crying out loud! She made a mental note to stick to pants from now on. That was when the particularly geeky looking guy, Declan? Denny? Something along those lines. With all the names flying around the room Ruby knew it's take a little more than a brief introduction of everyone at once to remember all their names. At any rate, what's-his-face mentioned not being able to sing Kumbaya. Now that was something Ruby could do.

Rubyjogged over to the stairs as another what's-his-face introduced himself. "The name's Ruby and I can sing Kumbaya but as you'll be hearing a lot of my voice in days to come I'll let you off easy. Ruby jogs up closer to what's-his-face the first and what's-his-face the second. "By the way," she adds, feeling utterly blessed for her tiny frame and using it the slip past both the what-his-faces before continuing, "I've been working since I was a tot." she turns to those behind her, particularly toward the guy who's dad who's 'hotshot' dad owned a restaurant. "My parents are farmers," Ruby finishes, giving the man a flirtatious wink of triumph

Lin was already back from her coffee run and waited in her office with Eliza for the newcomers to arrive. The screens behind her displayed what the cameras in the stairwells were catching.
"I'm so excited! This is going to be fun." Lin exclaimed. Eliza interrupted her excitement,
"Ms. Wilde what was the purpose of hiring these people? They aren't qualified like you said."
Honestly Eliza was confused on what the company does, but the people she met downstairs were certainly not fit to work under Ms. Wilde.

"That Eliza, is something you and the others will be figuring out together." Lin walked out of her office and to the lobby ready to greet her new employees

Alison took off her shoes and followed the others. After all, it was easier to run barefoot. She smiled at her co-workers. " Greetings! I'm Alison Rena, but feel free to call me just Ali" Alison said while jogging, not bothered to treat this as a race, as long as she made it on time, she would be fine." This is my second job- I used to work at the candy store." she finishes and continues jogging up the stairs.

Already, Dennis' breath was beginning to hitch as he ascended the steps. He had been forced to run as a kid, sure, but that was as a kid. And even then, getting last place was a lucky shot. Now he was surviving on a diet of Chinese takeout and cheap gas station coffee, with the occasional apple when he was feeling 'healthy'. Not the best thing when you had to run up a hundred too many stairs. Still, there was a competitive air as everyone was making their way to the top. It was a little intoxicating, and Dennis found himself moving faster. The young man quickened his pace as he practically jumped over the occasional step. He didn't have to be first, but so long as he wasn't the last.

"I look forward to working with you all," Dennis managed to say in between heavy breaths. It never hurt to be polite, even when racing up stairs. His spirits perked up as he caught sight of the end of the stairs. Thank goodness. He could feel his heart pounding, and his once clean shirt was a rumpled mess. Still, that did little to quench his cheer. Gathering what was left of his dwindling energy, Dennis powered up the remaining steps.

"Hello everyone my name is Richard Hyde but you may call me Richie or Mr.Richard" The older gentleman said in this thick New England accent, Making a brisk jog up the stairs trying to remember all the names of his co-workers. The older male was just trying to keep up with his young co-workers and not treating this as a race.

Jonah was in pretty good shape from all the times he had to run away from the police (and just working out in general), but didn’t try to get a head nor did he understand what was happening. He saw a few people race to be upfront and assumed that a game of tag had started. Everyone was introducing themselves for some unknown reason so he decided to do the same.

“My name is Jonah Miller, I’m hoping that I can help support my family’s business (mob work) with this job.” He directed this towards no one in particular, as he effortlessly kept position in the middle. He was fortunate the first task required physical strength, because besides abnormal luck, that’s all he has.

Robin continued to try and advance up the stairs faster than the others, trying to make it look effortless. He was dying on the inside. As the end of the stairs came into view, he turned around to look at the guy named Jonah. “Hey! We have the same surname! What are the chances? Must be destiny, haha!” He laughed, but he was fuming behind his smile. Sharing a surname with someone just made him blend more into the crowd rather than stand out. However; he could use the other Miller to his advantage. If Robin cocked up, he could shrug it off 'it wasn't me, it was the other Miller.'

As a sly smirk came to his lips and he was about to be the FIRST off of the stairs, he slipped and whacked his chin on the top step. He bit his tongue and slid down a couple of stairs as people began to pass him.

He whimpered quietly.

It wasn't long before the man overtook Ruby again. Not that she minded, she'd made her point. Besides, she was not fit enough for this circumstance. Too bad they could see the clock. Finally the end of the stair came into few. Ruby gave a sigh of relief. That was when the 'thump' came from the guy in front tripping. Ruby stifled a laugh. She couldn't help it.

Instead of overtaking him, however, Ruby held out her hand toward the fallen man. Either because of her damned morals to make everything up or because she knew she'd need to be liked to be let off of all the office pranks to come, she didn't know herself. "Up you get. Are you alright?"

The new employees were nearing the top of the stairs, about to complete this challenge with ease. But who said working was easy? The door to the top floor lobby was locked, they would soon find out. A note posted on the door that read:
Find the map to the building on one of the available floors in the remaining time you are given and the hint provided. Teamwork is the key! To make it easier it is not all the way down on the 1st floor :)
Hint:
Rest your feet put not too long, breaks are only 30 minutes.
