A New Age - Ancient Era NRP

I'm okay with or without random events, but having them seems to rub some people the wrong way, so it might be better to exclude them and hope we create enough natural interaction to keep the RP from dying (a difficult thing to achieve in an NRP, but it can be done).

Oh and I'm constantly working on my nation sheet, still ironing some things out, however.

If anyone is up for some relations/history I'd love to talk, just let me know.

I posted my incomplete but WIP Nation Sheet. Considering it is a city state, I realize the claim is somewhat large, but much of this land is uninhabited, and what is (like the port) are de-facto members of the city-state for obvious reasons like protection and economic stability.

I also know the social structure can be slightly confusing, but just know that while wealth is seen as power, this is only the case because of the people. There is no official democracy, but the people have the means and the power to overtake the current aristocrats at any time. Think of an unofficial type of ochlocracy working in conjunction with an aristrocracy. Make sense, or should I restructure part of my NS?

Social dynamics: Pyre is a nation of ambitious, highly cordial citizens who look to wealth as a primary symbol of power and dominance, but only if this wealth is used in the name of progress for all. The nation is ruled by the upper-class aristocrats which have the main-say in all things politics, therefore ensuring that wealth is certainly seen as all things power. As religion and democracy are almost nonexistent in the nation, it would be assumed that the denizens would fall victim to greed and corruption, but the results have been quite the opposite, as the rather young nation has achieved a great amount of success in its time as an independent, free nation. This can most likely be attributed to the high regard Pyrians hold for all things progress, on the political, social, and economic level. Pyrians view a utilitarian progress as the greatest, and therefore hold equality above freedom in many instances despite its oligarchic political formation. For this reason, the collection of wealth is seen as great only if such wealth is not hoarded but rather injected back into the Pyrian economic system. Those who hoard or become greedy are looked down upon in the system, and the power their wealth once brought about becomes almost useless.

For the reasons stated above, forced wealth distribution is non-existent in the society, as the social structure indirectly ensures that hoarding wealth is nearly impossible. The mutually beneficial relationship between the wealthy aristocrats and the other classes of the city states only remains stable when the economic status does not favor one side nor the other. However, this stable equilibrium is slowly beginning to become susceptible to an increasing wealth inequality as immigrants and foreigners from other lands flock to Pyre as it is seen as a nation of pure opportunity.

Fashion:

Pyrians hold no concrete views on fashion, but simple garments are often seen as mutually beneficial for all. Lower class Pyrians usually wear simple leather garments, while middle class Pyrians as well as the aristocracy wear woolen cloth or silk clothing. Dresses are somewhat rare in the society and only worn on special occasions. Pyrians hold no color preferences, as senses of nationalism are limited in the nation for fear of being looked down upon.

Calendar:

Pyrians view celebrations as frivolous, and therefore only have one festival during their entire year, which starts at the beginning of fall and lasts for approximately ten days. The festival allows individuals to celebrate whatever they like, whether it be art or something entirely different. Religion, on a political level, is allowed to be celebrated at the festival, but the deep distaste Pyrians hold for religion ensures that any of these attempts are never quite successful at converting or bringing people in to a certain religious philosophy.

Law:

Law is very liberal and accepting in Pyrian society, with social freedoms, as well as economic, running high. That being said, there is still a compendium of city ordinances and laws known as the "Equilibrus", where all criminal actions as well as the legal process taken to punish crime is outlined. There are limited regulations in place, rather, law is handled in a much more punitive measure. For this reason, the law of Pyre can best be associated with a modern-day Libertarian philosophy.

The Equilibrus is managed by the High Arbiter of Law who is appointed by the Pyrian council. The High Arbiter of Law can alter, remove, or add laws and ordinances to the Equilibrus, but only if he receives unanimous support from the council. The process is designed to ensure that any alterations to the Equilibrus are difficult to pass. The general process for punishing criminal action is a bare-bones trial led by regular Arbiters of Law appointed by the High Arbiter of Law. Those accused of crime are prosecuted by either the City-State or the person they encroached against, and evidence of each side is presented in a short time-frame. After this time-frame, the Arbiter decides on a verdict and sentencing.

Type of Government: Elective Aristocracy (Limited Republic) - There is a council of five, each of which oversee particular sections of the nation, including: Domestic Affairs, Foreign Relations, Economic Stability, Military and Defense, and Inter-City Operations. There is no limit to a council-members term, as he or she can only be removed by unanimous consent from the other councilors. There is also a "People's Representative". Although holding no power in the council, this individual is elected democratically by the people to represent their interests and ensure that the council is working effectively. It is considered the most important position in the Pyrian government as the people are considered to wield the most power despite the absence of a concrete Republic.

Influence and relations:

HelCore - NEUTRAL - Relationships with HelCore have been limited despite their close proximity, but it is safe to say that the two nations consider themselves on neutral terms.

Important People:

Daamos of Pyre Domestic Councilor - Daamos is considered the most important council member and is therefore the unofficial leader of Pyre. Although he has no more power than the other council members, his word and opinion carries much weight.
Vuden of the People People's Representative - Vuden represents the people of Pyre inside of the council, and is considered one of the people due to his lack of sustainable wealth. Vuden ensures that the council is running to benefit all, and is often considered to hold almost the same amount of power as the Domestic Councilor, if not more.

Trading and tax:

There is a hefty entry tax to enter Pyre and an even greater fee to become a resident there, as immigration has slowly begun to become looked down upon in the social system. Otherwise, taxes are limited. There is a small property tax that primarily affects the rich, but this tax would be considered small compared to other nations. Otherwise, trade is uninhibited by the state and the market usually ensures that prices remain at steady levels. The social stigma surrounding greed means that high prices or low wages will often result in bankruptcy for any business or organization.

Pyrians use simple copper and silver coins as methods of currency, with silver coins being considered that of twelve copper coins. For bulk transfers of currency, the wealthy use gold, although this is rare as the trickle-down economics of Pyre usually ensure that the wealthy have no reason to keep such large amounts of currency for any extended period or time.

Military -

The military of Pyre is of average size for the nation's population, consisting of approximately 32,000 full time soldiers and sailors. In times of crisis, a militia can be raised which can approximately triple the size of this military, although the militia will not be trained nor be well equipped. The military is funded by both the council of Pyre as well as many of the rich aristocrats within the nation. For this reason, the army is reasonably well equipped.

The land division of the military, which numbers 28,000 men, is split into four primary cores, although these cores are likely to be combined in cases where military action is needed to be taken.

• The People's Guard - 5,000 (4600 Swordsmen, 400 Crossbowmen) of the most well trained, well equipped soldiers who are tasked with protecting the borders of Pyre at all costs. They are equipped with gladius-esque weapons, short-blades primarily designed to inflict stab and puncture wounds. They wield tall, rectangular shields made of thick wood and painted with the flag or colors of Pyre. They are equipped with chain-mail which is interlaced with a hard leather to form a protective barrier against other weapons, along with elegantly crafted iron helms which give their heads full protection. Crossbowmen are commonly found within the People's Guard, numbering around 400.


• The Pyrian Blaze - 10,000 (8400 Swordsmen, 1600 Archers) men who are considered the backbone of the military. They are considered full-time soldiers but do not make fighting a profession, as Pyre has yet to use it's military in any offensive assault. They are equipped with longswords as well as wooden kiteshields. Archers wield longbows. The Pyrian Blaze outfits their men in hard leather gear and iron helms, although a small percentage of the men have equipped themselves with mail similar to that of the People's Guard.


• The First Guard - 10,000 (6,000 Pikes, 2,000 Spearmen, 2,000 Archers) well trained soldiers, these are considered the old lot of the Pyrian military. They were the first to establish themselves as a military force and are still highly respected at present day. The First Guard uses pikes in conjunction with spearmen to create highly defensive formations that can hold for quite some time. They are equipped with pikes, spears, smaller buckler shields, as well as shortswords for close range combat. They are outfitted in hard leather as well as chainmail in a manner similar to that of the People's Guard, although the variations between units is greater.


• The Grand Harrens of Pyre - 3,000 extremely well trained and equipped heavy horsemen, the Grand Harrens of Pyre can be considered one of the greatest cavalry forces in the world. Funded and founded by the noble family of Harren of Port Harren, this garrison of cavalry is truly a marvel for a variety of reasons, the most important being the mount itself. The Grand Harrens of Pyre are mounted upon Yrviden, the large horse hybrid which is capable of crashing through enemy lines with the ferocity of a bear (outlined in the species sheet below). The Yrviden are armored in segmented links of iron which create a scale of extremely durable armor. The riders are armed in similar, although some prefer to wear chain instead of the segmented scale armor for maneuverability. Here is a visual display of this armor. The riders bear kontos or lances designed to deliver killing blows upon impact, but when engaged in prolonged melee the riders also bear maces which are capable of crushing in helmets with ease. The only reason all of this equipment can be held is because of the Yrviden, although the Yrviden require great amounts of food, water, and rest to function at full potential.
  The riders themselves are selected at young age, around 17-18, and plunged in to training headfirst, as they are immediately tasked with training a Yrviden without the assistance of any tools. Many recruits are injured in this process, and some have even died, but the strict guidelines ensure that a rider develops an extremely close relationship with their Yrviden.


The naval division of the military consists of 4,000 sailors, ready to set sail for any reason at a moment's notice.

Landscape:

While there is a mountainous region to the west of Pyre, the area primarily surrounding the primary city (located on the Peninsula) is a flatland, primarily grassy. There are several small lakes here and there primarily used by fishermen, as well as some rolling hills in the southern portion of Pyre's land claims near Port Harren. Mount Pyre is located on the largest hill in the City-State.

Notable places:

Aside from the city of Pyre and the port of Harren, there are limited notable locations in Pyre, although Mount Pyre is one such place. It is rooted in the historical foundation of the nation and stands as the closest thing to a religion that the nation supports. Sitting atop a rather massive hill (almost a mountain), atop the peak of this mountain resides the remains of an ancient Pyre and a tiny village where the ancestors of the city-state had resided before founding the city. Mount Pyre is abandonded today, but is nonetheless vigilantly guarded as it is considered a historical site. When looking back upon the tiny village, an average Pyrian will compare the architecture with that of the present day and see the great city of Pyre as being a sure-fire sign of progress.

Yrviden

Name: Yrviden
Classification: Animal (Horse)
Appearance:

Yrviden are roughly 1.5 times the size of a regular horse, in both weight and height. They come in many different colors, and primarily differ from other horses as they have much more hair around their hooves and manes as well as very thick and lush tails that are often dread-locked by their Pyrian riders to as to prevent the tail from interfering in battle.



Shared traits:

Yrviden all possess a keen sense of anger towards any species outside their own, and therefore are very difficult to tame and can even lash out on occasion. Their aggressive nature makes them excellent on the battlefield, as this energy is often tamed by its rider and utilized when charging or engaging opponents.

Natural abilities:

Yrviden differ from normal horses in a multitude of ways. They are stronger, faster, and can ride for longer periods of time. Yrviden have the ability to run nearly twice as fast as a regular horse for a short amount of time (10-15 minutes) before needing rest. On average, they run about 1.5 times as fast as a horse and can run about 1.25 times the distance a regular horse.

Lifespan:

Yrviden average a lifespan of 20-25 years as opposed to horses who average 25-30 years.

History:

Yrviden were originally discovered in the plains not far west of Pyre when the settlers began to colonize this area and begin work on the massive city. At first, the young Pyrians did not know how to tame the horses, but soon came to discover that the only way to tame a horse was to simply stay around it for an extended period of time without harming falling victim to death. After about three to four hours, a Yrviden will slowly come to tame itself and develop a relationship with the individual that has attempted to relate with it. However, for a full-relationship to occur, an individual must engage in social interactions (whatever they may be) with the Yrviden for approximately three to four months. The Pyrians primarily left this unique type of horse alone, until they decided that using them within their military would be quite effective. The population of the Yrviden has slighly waned for this reason, but there are still plenty of the animal surrounding the land of Pyre to the extent that they are not a threatened species.

Yrviden are primarily used by the Grand Harrens of Pyre and are capable of carrying the armored warriors without breaking stride.
