The free section is probably the best way to start. Read some posts, get an idea of the syntax, have a character in mind and then post the character into the OOC of a thread that wants people that catches your interest.

Minor disputes caused by miscommunication in the OOC or a general slowdown as a result of having to post 3-4 options (if that quantity) for the other party to make an alternate move when needing to get permission to assume actions a little due to the lack of collaborative posting, which I feel stifles creativity a bit.

Seems to me like it would be simpler to just collab these things on a piratepad or whatnot to avoid what I see as inevitable issues.

Combat in text based RPs. How does it work?

Straight writing for combat, typically it's a matter of one side posting an action (or 2 or 3) and the other side reacting and posting their own actions. Rinse and repeat, either in omegasize posts in arena forum or in a clean collab. One could make arrangements beforehand, or even throw stats/dice into an otherwise statless/diceless game, but I find not integrating those things to be preferable and find them even unnecessary if the right partners are involved.

Is it just me or did that last one go a little into godmod territory? Seemed to take a lot of actions at once unless I'm missing a page or series of posts here, or if the kidnap attempt convo above was consent.

What did the slam actually do? Sorry, busy at the moment and I don't think I caught the effects properly.
